The Underwriting Support Manager will oversee an underwriting support team that is the primary point of contact for underwriters and agents/brokers within the team's assigned territory. Works collaboratively with sales, underwriting, other Commercial Lines (CL) management and staff to achieve overall, division, and region goals.
What You'll Do As an Underwriting Support Manager, you will:
- Manage staff that provide administrative and technical support to, agent/brokers, sales, and underwriters within their assigned territory as well as internal and external support to auditing, premium accounting, and other commercial lines functions. All work is performed while ensuring that deadlines are met and that service and quality standards are attained in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
- Develop procedures and processes and work with staff to ensure their understanding and adherence to defined procedures.
- Oversee the development of staff and implementation of appropriate training and cross-training programs, while encouraging productive teamwork.
- Provide technical expertise in handling sensitive or unusual customer service issues or complaints. Work with other internal departments, operations, or state insurance departments and examiners in the resolution of problems.
- Support the creation and maintenance of procedural manuals used by the team.
- Oversee analysis, creation, and evaluation of internal reports, studies, and notifications to identify, correct, and/or prevent error situations. Anticipate potential system or production problem areas and recommend corrective actions.
- Conduct timely performance and salary reviews and ensure all subordinates adhere to human resources policies and practices.
Additionally, you will:
- Monitor sales and underwriting feedback on support issues. Work collaboratively with sales and underwriting management in a shared effort of achieving retention, profitability, and new business goals.
- Maintain system proficiency and work directly with other departments as necessary.
- Provide input or lead workflows, system designs, and process improvement initiatives both within the team and throughout supported business areas.
- Promote a strong customer service philosophy, review work processes, reports, and monitor performance.
- Maintain effective relationships with various home office personnel and functions, including premium audit, premium accounting, underwriting, customer service, IT, HR, Sentry U, and safety services.
- Participate in projects that require a high level of knowledge of systems, products, coverages, procedures, workflows, and process. May interact with management in problem resolution and rush situations.
- Provide management with a variety of reports that identify trends, service improvement opportunities, and future needs.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned from time to time.
What it Takes
- Minimum of 5 years of related work experience; bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Knowledge of Sentry's Regional independent agency distribution model and internal workflows helpful
- Knowledge of commercial markets and underwriting principles as well as the ability to educate others on these topics is highly desired
- Familiarity with Sentry's commercial divisions, underwriting guidelines, and risk appetite preferred.
- Strong ability to provide leadership to employees and supervise in a fast-paced environment.
- Exceptional composure, communications, and human relations skills
- Ability to prioritize work and maintain appropriate service standards.
- Proven ability to analyze data, identify trends, and communicate results as well as ability to formulate and implement solutions.
