JOB TITLE: Safety & Sustainability Manager

DEPARTMENT: Resort Operations

REPORTS TO: Vice President, Finance

LOCATION: Solitude, Utah

POSITION:

The Safety & Sustainability Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring resort-wide programs that promote workplace health, safety, and advance environmental sustainability. This position integrates employee health and safety initiatives with resort sustainability goals, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, supporting insurance and workers' compensation processes, and cultivating a culture of safety, wellness, and environmental stewardship across all departments.

Key Responsibilities

Workers Compensation, Health and Safety Management

  • Workers' Compensation Administration
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all workers' compensation claims.
  • Coordinate communication among employees, supervisors, insurance carriers, and healthcare providers.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure timely reporting of incidents and claims.
  • Monitor injury trends and develop proactive measures to reduce workplace incidents.
  • Safety Program Development
  • Develop, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures across all departments.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and job hazard analyses.
  • Lead employee training sessions, including OSHA, equipment use, and resort-specific safety practices.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Serve as chair or co-chair of the resort Safety Committee.
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Assist in developing and updating emergency action plans.
  • Support training and drills related to evacuation, medical response, severe weather, and other hazards.
  • Act as liaison with local emergency services when necessary.


Employee Wellness & Fitness Programs

  • Coordinate and promote the resort's participation in employee wellness initiatives, including the Fit for Snow program.
  • Develop seasonal and year-round health campaigns focused on injury prevention, fitness, and overall well-being.
  • Partner with HR to integrate wellness resources into employee onboarding and ongoing training.
  • Track participation and outcomes, providing metrics and feedback to leadership.


Sustainability Coordination

  • Program Development & Oversight
  • Support the resort's environmental and sustainability strategy, aligned with Alterra's company-wide goals.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor programs for energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling, water conservation, and emissions reduction.
  • Employee & Guest Engagement
  • Lead sustainability education initiatives for staff, encouraging best practices in daily operations.
  • Create guest-facing programs and messaging that highlight the resort's environmental stewardship.
  • Data & Reporting
  • Collect, analyze, and report sustainability metrics to resort leadership and Alterra corporate.
  • Assist in preparing sustainability-related sections of annual reports, certifications, or grant applications.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Partnerships
  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations at the federal, state, and local level.
  • Build partnerships with local organizations, agencies, and community groups to support sustainability projects.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Sustainability, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 3+ years of experience in safety, sustainability, or a related field (hospitality, ski industry, or outdoor recreation experience preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, workers' compensation processes, and insurance administration.
  • Demonstrated success in program development, training, and employee engagement.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse stakeholders.
  • Passion for outdoor recreation, employee well-being, and environmental sustainability
  • Intermediate skiing or snowboarding ability preferred.


Working Conditions
* This position requires on-site presence at the resort with frequent visits to outdoor and indoor work areas.
* Exposure to variable weather conditions, including winter environments at high elevation.
* Occasional evening, weekend, or holiday work required during peak operating seasons.
* Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and move safely across uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
