The Sr. Controls System Professional at Devon works within the Information Technology department and is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting the automated systems that monitor and control field equipment and processes. Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing routine issues across different Business Units: Capable of working independently and competently across multiple business units. They are viewed as the subject matter expert for resolving issues in their assigned area and have a fundamental understanding of Instrumentation and Controls.
  • Direct Business Unit Support: They often work directly with business units to provide automated solutions and production support. Travel to respective business units can be expected.
  • Configuring and maintaining control systems: They take Engineering Change Requests and implement those program changes in the PLC. This includes SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and DCS (Distributed Control Systems) that automate and monitor drilling, production, and processing operations.
  • Ensuring system security and reliability: They work to protect control systems from cyber threats and ensure high system uptime.
  • Integrating control systems with IT infrastructure: This involves connecting field systems to corporate networks and databases for real-time data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Supporting operations: They troubleshoot issues, perform upgrades, and ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
  • Collaborating with other teams: They work closely with operations, engineering, and cybersecurity teams to ensure seamless and secure operations.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and optimization of advanced automation and control systems.
  • Manage the installation of electrical equipment, including power distribution, instrumentation, and variable speed drives.
  • Oversee the development of operator instruction manuals and technical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and quality standards in all projects.

Skillset:

  • Advanced knowledge of control systems, electrical design, and automation technologies.
  • Strong project management and leadership skills.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and coordinate cross-functional teams.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a closely related field (strongly preferred)
  • Professional certifications (e.g., ISA Certified Control Systems Technician) are often expected

Competencies:

  • Project Management:Plans and leads complex automation projects.
  • Technical Leadership:Provides guidance and mentorship to junior staff.
  • Quality Focus:Ensures compliance with safety and industry standards.
  • Process Improvement:Identifies and implements system optimizations.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration:Coordinates with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams.
