ECU is in Greenville, a city of 90,000 residents in the coastal region of North Carolina. The Department of Pharmacology consists of 13 full-time faculty members, nine full-time research technicians, three postdoctoral scientists, two full-time administrative staff, and 13 graduate students. The department teaches pharmacology, therapeutics, and toxicology to medical, dental, graduate, and nursing students. A wide variety of specialized courses are also taught for graduate students. The educational objective of the department is to provide a sound basic foundation upon which medical and dental students may build rational approaches to drug therapy regardless of the area of clinical specialization. The graduate program through the Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology Concentration, is broadly based to prepare students for careers in academics, research, government, industry, and medicine.
Job Duties
The Department of Pharmacology at the Brody School of Medicine ( BSOM), East Carolina University ( ECU), invites applications for a full-time, 12-month fixed-term faculty position at the rank of Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, or Research Associate Professor. The Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, or Research Associate Professor will be responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research efforts in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, writing experimental protocols, organizing and implementing experiments, data collection and experimental procedures, recording and managing data, implementing quality control practices, analyzing data with various statistical techniques, and preparing data for dissemination at local/regional/national/international scientific meetings, submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed scientific journals for publication, and submitting research proposals to external funding bodies to support his/her independent research program and salary.

The Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, or Research Associate Professor will also supervise undergraduate and graduate research students and contribute to the department's teaching mission, as consistent with their area of expertise.

Additional expectations: The Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, or Research Associate Professor is expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research, including biological and chemical safety, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC), and responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

  • 60% of the Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, or Research Associate Professor's time will be devoted to conducting the studies associated with the developed experimental protocols.
  • 20% of the Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, or Research Associate Professor's time will be devoted to report writing, including scientific manuscripts, associated with the developed experimental protocols.
  • 20% of the Research Instructor, Research Assistant Professor, or Research Associate Professor's time will be devoted to literature review and hypothesis development for the submission of extramural research award proposals.

Minimum Education/Experience
M.D, DVM, Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Toxicology, or a closely related field, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification. For Ph.D. all degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Evidence of grant writing experience with at least one proposal submission to external funding agencies. Prior success in securing funding is preferred.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring undergraduate or graduate students and contributing to classroom or laboratory instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting literature reviews and developing research hypotheses for grant proposals.
