Hiring Range
The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. The full hourly range for this position is $30.61/hr. - $39.75/hr. The hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is Step 1: $30.61/hr.

About the Job
The Access Services Unit is the primary customer service unit of the Library. Access Services operations include information delivery, resource sharing, course resource services, collection and stacks maintenance. Under the direction of the Head of Access Services, the Interlibrary Services Coordinator (ISC) manages interlibrary services operations, including supervising 2-3 FTE (equivalent to 5-9 student assistants) performing daily interlibrary processing tasks. The ISC is responsible for managing workflows for borrowing materials to meet the research needs of UC Merced users and lending of materials to other libraries. The ISC continuously seeks new ways to improve efficiency of resource sharing practices. The ISC is responsible for creating and maintaining procedural documents and manuals related to interlibrary services; recruits, trains and evaluates student assistants; as well as compiling monthly and yearly interlibrary loan statistics. The ISC also coordinates effectively with other Access Services staff to accomplish unit goals and to maintain the highest customer service standards. The ISC has the additional primary responsibility of providing reference/information services to UC Merced Library users, and participates in University of California system wide and local library committees. The ISC is expected to perform other duties as assigned. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Interlibrary Services
Operations. Oversees daily operations of interlibrary lending and borrowing, with a primary emphasis on lending. Identifies and independently resolves problems concerning borrowing and lending services, including shipping and receiving, and necessary communication with the courier. Identifies problem resource sharing (RS) requests; selects lender rota following departmental guidelines for consistent turnaround time. Performs and monitors daily RS activities in accordance with UC Merced Library policies, RS codes, and copyright law. Procedures. Engages in short- and long-range planning and develops policies and procedures for RS services. Continuously seeks new ways to improve the efficiency of resource sharing practices. Prepares and maintains manuals related to Interlibrary Services. Recommends and drafts procedural changes. Works closely with Library Administrative Coordinator regarding billing and purchasing procedures. Reference/Information Services. Performs complex bibliographic citation verification using numerous specialized online catalogs and indexes, including ERIC, WorldShare, ProQuest platform databases, JSTOR, Academic Search Complete, ScienceDirect, etc. Customer Service. Applies comprehensive knowledge of Library collection and policies when assisting users. Communicates request status with internal and external patrons as well as lending institutions; ensures the timely return of materials to lending libraries. Identifies and responds to patron concerns and problems. Systems. Manages various resource sharing systems such as Alma and Tipasa, coordinates software and hardware upgrades, reports, and resolves problems promptly. Maintains expertise related to interlibrary systems; optimizes RS technologies. Coordinates with other UC campuses and California Digital Library to ensure interlibrary systems are functioning properly. Advisory. Advises Access Services management on developments in interlibrary services operations and resource sharing. Recommends changes to Library policies and procedures related to interlibrary services and overall Access Services operations. Communicates with the Head of Collections regarding items under consideration for purchase for library collection. Collects and maintains statistics for ILL activity. Provides monthly and annual reports as needed.
Student Assistant Supervision
Primary supervisor for ILL student assistants. Runs recruitments, approves timesheets, creates and maintains student work schedules, evaluations, and disciplinary action. Supervision. Supervises 5-9 student assistants performing interlibrary processing tasks. Training. Responsible for training student assistant staff to perform routine interlibrary processing functions. Maintains training documentation. Procedures. Prepares and maintains procedures related to Interlibrary Services. Contributes to other Access Services procedural documents.
Information Services
Provides basic and intermediate reference and information services in-person and online. Refers complex or advanced questions to the appropriate library staff. Maintains close communication with librarians at UC Merced Library to ensure accurate and effective information services. Instructs and assists library patrons on how to place ILL requests. Troubleshoot problems with request functionality in coordination with UC Merced IT and California Digital Library.
Other Duties
Local Service. Serves on local committees, workgroups, and teams as assigned. Project Management. Manages projects in support of Library-wide and Access Services Unit goals.
Qualifications
EDUCATION and REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training. High School Diploma, General Equivalency Degree (GED), or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) or equivalent. Bachelor's degree from an accredited university. (Preferred) Expected to possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the positions.
CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Excellent oral and written communication skills required, including use of proper grammar and standard business formats. Exemplifies excellent customer service skills and interacts effectively with the public in a library setting. Maintains complete discretion, confidentiality, sensitivity and professional judgment. Demonstrates flexibility in scheduling and a willingness to alter work schedule as needed to meet the staffing needs of the Library. Demonstrates administrative experience and knowledge of standard office practices. Possesses excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize work, and complete assignments independently as well as work in a team environment. Knowledgeable in use of Windows based computer programs, specifically MS Word and Excel. Demonstrates knowledge of database management software, ability to conduct searches on the internet and familiarity with e-mail programs. Demonstrates an intermediate level of knowledge and skill in the use of library online systems, scholarly databases and resources. Knowledgeable in the use of complex library systems and procedures. Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of advanced interlibrary loan processes. Demonstrates skill using sophisticated online interlibrary loan systems. Works effectively in a fast-paced work environment, supporting multiple functions with fluctuating priorities. Knowledgeable of UC Policies and Procedures. Demonstrates skill in hiring, training, and supervising student employees. Two or more years of college level course work or an equivalent combination of education and experience. (Preferred)
