Milliman's Seattle healthcare practice is seeking a motivated Data Science Intern to join our team. As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience working with large datasets, developing predictive models, and delivering actionable insights for real-world business challenges. This is a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced data scientists, actuaries, and consultants to impact client outcomes. While somewhat flexible on timing, we expect the intern to work onsite from our Seattle office for a 12-week period during the December 2025 - March 2026 timeframe.


About Our Practice

Milliman's Seattle Health Practice serves a wide variety of organizations, including insurance companies, health plans, state and federal agencies, healthcare providers, reinsurance companies, providers, Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), and employers. The staff consists of 180+ actuarial professionals in addition to healthcare consultants, IT, Administrative, and other non-actuarial staff.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Assist in the collection, cleaning, and preprocessing of large datasets from various sources, including APIs and cloud-based platforms
  • Support the development and implementation of statistical and machine learning, and AI models to address real-world business challenges
  • Conduct exploratory data analysis and data visualization to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights
  • Collaborate with team members to solve complex business problems using data-driven and software engineering approaches
  • Document methodologies, code, processes, and findings in a clear and organized manner, following best practices for reproducibility and knowledge sharing
  • Present results, insights, and recommendations to team members and stakeholders through written reports and presentations
  • Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, code reviews, and knowledge-sharing activitie


To be successful in this role, you have the following qualifications:
Professional Qualifications:

  • Working towards or completed a bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Economics, or another related field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python and/or R for data analysis and modeling
  • Familiarity with SQL or other database querying languages; experience with data integration and transformation a plus


    Personal Qualifications:

    • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
    • Collaborative mindset and strong teamwork abilities
    • Eagerness to learn new technologies and adapt in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
    • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently when required


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Previous internship or project experience in data science, analytics, or actuarial work
    • Experience with data visualization and dashboarding tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, R Shiny, or equivalent)
    • Proficiency with Excel and/or VBA for data analysis and reporting
    • College GPA of 3.3 or higher



        Location

        This position is based out of the Milliman office in Seattle, WA. Applicants must be willing to work onsite full-time.

        Compensation

        The salary range for this position is $21- $38 per hour, depending on relevant factors, including but not limited to, education, work experience, skills, certifications, location, etc.
