About our group:

The Materials Science Lab at Seagate Recording Media in Fremont is a state-of-the-art laboratory equipped with numerous advanced characterization instrumentation. The chemical and materials team specializes in the detection of trace compounds, identification of unknowns, and testing of the media interface. As part of the product development team, our goal is to understand and evaluate the risks associated with new media designs and media processes.

About the role - you will:

  • Design and execute tests on a variety of sample types to identify materials, quantify key parameters, and detect structural or compositional changes.
  • Analyze and communicate results through clear, data-driven reports and presentations.
  • Interpret findings within the broader context of the project or system under evaluation, connecting test data to overall performance or quality objectives.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in analytical instrumentation, including troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and method development for future testing.

About you:

  • Proficient in hands-on analytical techniques, with a practical understanding of laboratory tools and instrumentation.
  • Able to synthesize complex information, integrating multiple data sources to form clear conclusions.
  • Strong in critical thinking, technical writing, and presentation skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Collaborative and self-motivated, contributing positively to team objectives while driving independent progress.

Your experience includes:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering and 5+ years of experience, or Master's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering and 3+ years of experience, or Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering and 0+ years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands-on experience with lab equipment like GC-MS, LCMS, ICPMS, GPC.



You Might Also Have:



  • Experience with statistical analysis software and coding or scripting for data processing or automation.
  • Familiarity with advanced analytical instrumentation such as SEM/EDX, TOF-SIMS, or ESCA.



The estimated base salary range for this position is $109,241.60 - $156,201.70. The individual salary is based on work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
