Responsibilities
Job Summary
Functions as a Surgeon for the Trauma Service performing primarily hospital-based surgical and critical care management for trauma patients within the Trauma Center. The Trauma Surgeon provides comprehensive evidence based care to a designated patient population and is accountable for patient care from evaluation in the Critical Care Unit, or Trauma Resuscitation Bay as indicated, through discharge of patients on the Trauma service. The Trauma Service Surgeon is accountable for the delivery of quality measures that will provide excellence in personalized healthcare. The Trauma Surgeon will provide communication to all involved physicians and intensivists to maintain continuity of care for all patients. Responsibilities will also include providing outpatient Trauma follow-up services as assigned.
Essential Functions
- Clinical Care: Provides hospital based trauma and critical care services incorporating established practice standards to decrease morbidity and mortality and improve quality of care, length of stay, resource efficiency, and fiscal accountability. Provides coverage as defined, of patients requiring trauma and surgical care as assigned. Provides trauma service coverage as assigned to meet service line and organizational goals. Provide trauma surgery coverage as assigned to meet service line and organizational goals.
- Leadership & Compliance: Participates in establishing a positive rapport with the physician staff, community physicians, various departments to include but not be limited to critical care, nursing, case management, social work, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory therapy, rehabilitative services and other appropriate service areas. Facilitates and supports the mentoring of other physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers as it relates to area of expertise. Creates a climate for professional practice with other disciplines. Supports the vision and values of the organization. Attends and participates in all Trauma Committees and other committees as appropriate. Supports admission and transfer protocols, policies, procedures and guidelines related to those involving Trauma patients. Collaborates with the Medical Director and Service Line Administrator to provide fiscal accountability for the service. Collaborates with Case Management and the Clinical Documentation Specialists to ensure appropriate documentation is complete for efficient and fiscally responsible operations of service line.
- Research & Education: Facilitates and participates in PI, educational and outreach programs related to Trauma care. Participates in research activities within the Trauma program for the purpose of improving the quality of care in the program. Collaborates with the Vice President for Research, Trauma Research Nurse, Medical Director and Service Line Administrator to identify research opportunities associated with Trauma. Participates with the Director of Medical Education and Medical Director of Academic Affairs to assure appropriate teaching opportunities for Fellows, Residents and medical students as well as other related educational programs exist.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
- M.D. or D.O Unrestricted Arizona Licensure as M.D. or D.O. (or eligible for Arizona Licensure), Graduate of an accredited Surgical residency, with strong emphasis in Trauma care - Required
Experience
- Experience in Critical Care. - Required
- Recent direct acute trauma and critical care clinical experience. - Preferred
- Instructor status. - Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Physician\PHYS - Physician Board-Certified General Surgery. - Required
- Currently ATLS Certification. - Required
