Job Summary


The Jr. Refractive Technician is responsible for the efficient organization and operation of all technical functions of the refractive and cosmetic services including surgical technician duties. The assignments may vary from day to day, and require the individual to be flexible and well-trained. The primary responsibilities of the Jr. Refractive Technician is assisting in the preparation, processing, care and maintenance of instruments, supplies and equipment, and functions as a member of the procedural team during refractive and cosmetic procedures. The Jr. Refractive Technician functions in a specialty service and utilizes critical thinking skills to troubleshoot service implementation and equipment issues related to refractive equipment, instrumentation and devices. It is essential that the Jr. Refractive Technician is a team player collaborating with the nursing staff, surgeons, optometrists, fellow technicians and administrative staff. The Jr. Refractive Technician must work to facilitate the care of the patient in a safe and expeditious manner.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $45.47 - $56.75 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or above
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in clinical ophthalmology/optometry
  • AHA CPR/BLS (including patient assessment and vital signs)
  • Advanced knowledge of ocular anatomy, physiology and terminology
  • Understanding of how anatomic systems and systemic disorders may affect the visual system
  • Demonstrated experience in patient instruction/education
  • Demonstrated ability in caring for and directing the blind or partially sighted patient
  • Demonstrated experience in ophthalmic instrumentation cleaning and maintenance
  • Demonstrated experience in minor surgical assisting and surgical set-up
  • Possesses the ability to work with intermittent standing and sitting for 8-9 hours/day
  • Good communication and organization skills, professionalism and motivation
  • Under the direction of the Manager, actively works toward TJC compliance
  • Demonstrated experience in responding to a patient emergency while in the clinic

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ophthalmic Surgical Assisting (OSA) from IJCAHPO
  • Graduate of Surgical technician training program
  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) from IJCAHPO
  • 1 year experience as surgical technician
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
  • Experience with a high-volume ophthalmic refractive or corneal practice or University Ophthalmic practice

License/Certification


  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or above
  • AHA CPR/BLS (including patient assessment and vital signs)
