Scientific Leader, GSK Vaccines - Lab Head, Cell & Molecular Biology

The Cell & Molecular Biology group at the US Research and Development Center, GSK Vaccines, is responsible for exploring novel viral targets and the design, production and in vitro characterization of vaccine candidates, including evaluation of their mechanism of action. This group plays an essential role in supporting GSK Vaccines projects in the preclinical and discovery space.

We are looking for a highly motivated leader with a proven record in utilizing the most up to date cellular biology, molecular biology, and protein biochemistry tools as well as experience with high-throughput technologies to design the best vector-based vaccines, and to provide expertise in vaccine development for GSK projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise in the areas of DNA cloning, in vitro RNA transcription, protein purification and biophysical analysis, and cell-based assay characterization of vaccine candidates.
  • Develop high-throughput workflows for cell and molecular biology processes to generate and screen vaccine candidates.
  • Utilizes state-of-the-art technologies to isolate and produce antibodies for vaccine design and characterization.
  • Design and develop new assays and technologies to support generation and profiling of vaccine candidates targeting DNA and RNA viruses.
  • Manage a team of 5-10 scientists.
  • Provide effective and inspiring leadership with an enterprise mindset, ensuring support to professional development and qualification of staff.
  • Ensure the team use cutting edge technologies and ideas to deliver best preclinical expertise to GSK vaccine projects in discovery, development, and life cycle management.
  • Ensure that the objectives of the team are aligned with R&D and business priorities and team activities are designed and delivered according to project needs.
  • Takes full accountability of management tasks for the team and meet data integrity and quality expectations.
  • Ensures the team delivers on assigned activities in the most efficient and resource conscious manner; drives innovation to establish methodology in the lab to enhance data quality and resource utilization.
  • Possesses strong scientific leadership to enable collaboration with key scientific internal and external stakeholders.
  • Participate in IP and regulatory filings and publish in peer reviewed journals.
  • Supervise PhD students and postdoctoral fellows as needed.
  • Accountable for the management monitoring of the laboratory, ensuring that compliance with the GSK Environment, Health and Safety standards are an integral part of the operations and culture.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in life sciences with at least 5 years of experience in a related biotechnology field.
  • Three or more years of experience in the fields of virology, molecular biology, cell biology, and protein biochemistry.
  • Three or more years of experience with complex DNA cloning and/or RNA in vitro transcription techniques.
  • One or more years of experience conducting antibody isolation and production.
  • Two or more years of experience in managing a team of scientists and forging collaborations in a matrix organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in virus-host interactions and/or vaccinology.
  • Prior experience in automation, high throughput cloning platforms, and cell-based screening.
  • Strong track-record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.

To be successful in the role, this person must:

  • Demonstrate a detailed knowledge in molecular biology, cell biology, and protein biochemistry.
  • Have practical knowledge in molecular cloning, nucleic acid purification, in vitro transcription, cell-based assays, and protein biochemistry.
  • Can understand, interpret, and communicate complex scientific data to determine next steps.
  • Be comfortable conversing with opinion leaders regarding highly technical information.
  • Comfortable in managing in a matrix environment.
  • Possess a good balance of creativity and analytical thinking faculties.
  • Display an ability to be productive and successful in an intense work environment as a Team Player

The US annual base salary for new hires in this position ranges from $136,125 to $226,875 The US salary ranges take into account a number of factors including work location within the US market, the candidate's skills, experience, education level and the market rate for the role. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program which is dependent on the level of the role. Available benefits include health care and other insurance benefits (for employee and family), retirement benefits, paid holidays, vacation, and paid caregiver/parental and medical leave.
