Position Summary:
This Post Doctoral Research Associate position in human-centered
machine listening is funded by a National Science Foundation grant on
accessible audio captioning of non-speech sounds, a collaboration between New
Jersey Institute of Technology's Sound Interaction and Computing (SInC) Lab
and New York University's Music and Audio Research Lab (MARL). This role will
develop datasets and models for multimodal representation learning and large
audio language models, designed to meet the needs of content creators and
viewers of captions for online media. A successful candidate will have a research
background in audio-language modeling and/or audio representation learning,
and they will be expected to take a leadership role in the project, aiding in
the supervision of junior researchers working on machine listening,
accessibility, and system development and evaluation.
Essential Functions:
-Advance large audio language modeling for accessible captioning of non-speech sounds.
-Publish research findings in top-tier venues (e.g., ICASSP, WASPAA, ISMIR, Interspeech, ICLR, ICML, NeurIPS, CHI, ASSETS) and present at conferences.
-Mentor graduate and undergraduate students working on related projects.
-Contribute to grant proposals and help secure future funding for the research program.
-Collaborate with our accessibility research team that works with deaf and hard-of-hearing stakeholders to understand captioning needs and designs and evaluates -system for real-world usability.
-Collaborate with industry partners and advocacy organizations to ensure research translates to practical impact.
-Other duties as assigned.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
-Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Electrical Engineering,
Music Technology, or related field.
-At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Salary Information:
In compliance with the NJ Pay Transparency Law, the negotiated starting annual salary for this position is $62,232.00 (USD). NJIT considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses or other items.
