The International Student & Scholar Services department is seeking 1 International Student Advisor, Senior to join the already awesome team taking the department to the next level of excellence!

The International Student Advisor, Senior, is a key member of the In-coming student team provides in person and virtual student advising related to F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations and University policies and deadlines using compliance software to maintain appropriate documentation, communication, and student support. The advisor works collaboratively with various admissions offices to issue new initial attendance and transfer I-20s to admitted international students, and helps manage onboarding communication, processes and support for incoming students. The ISA Sr. will utilize Sunapsis immigration compliance software and GSU's Banner system to review student requests, run relevant reports, issue documents, and manage their daily work. The position works as part of the student advising team in ISSS to educate international students on their immigration status and regulations and to assist them in meeting their academic and personal goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide student advising related to F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations and University policies and deadlines using compliance software
(Sunapsis) to maintain appropriate documentation, communication, and student support.

Remain current on federal immigration changes, access to advising resources, and key campus partners who can assist with related student needs and questions.
Provide student advising related to the individual's personal situation, including cultural adjustment academic support/testing/resources,
admissions processes, language skills, financial resources, and referrals to appropriate counseling or other services.

Work collaboratively with Undergraduate Admissions to issue initial attendance and transfer I-20s to newly admitted international students.
Assist the Associate Director as needed to provide SAVE verification for nonresident aliens (besides F-1) admitted to GSU after admission.
Assist with recommending F-1 students for need-based tuition waivers. Providing immigration advice to the Registrar for nonresident alien tuition classification/waiver application. Respond to alerts and student requests within ISSS's immigration compliance software (Sunapsis), update e-forms as needed, and keep up to date with software functionality in order to best serve students.

Provide resolution to student concerns and problems in absence of the Associate Director and refer issues and unique cases to ISSS leadership 10 Liaise with various colleagues off campus (AMIS, GAIE, GILC) and on (admissions, registrar, student accounts, academic advising, ESL, testing, etc.) to remain current on latest support and information related to international students, and to act as an advocate on their behalf.

Qualifications :

Minimum Hiring Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience; or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least two years of experience as a Designated School Official.
  • Master's degree in counseling, International Education, Student Affairs, or a closely related field and at least one academic year of F-1 immigration advising experience as a Designated School Official (DSO) or equivalent experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge and practice of federal immigration regulations related to F-1 and J-1 Visa holders
  • Prior experience advising international students in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse cultural population, OR personal/professional experience in international or study abroad contexts.
  • High level of attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Experience working collaboratively across departments.
  • Capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
