Essential Job Duties

NC State University's Building Maintenance and Operations (BMO) department is looking for a skilled and dedicated Facility Maintenance Technician - Journey to join our team!
In this role, you'll be part of the team that keeps campus facilities running smoothly, safely, and efficiently. You'll apply your mechanical and insulation skills to maintain, repair, and improve vital building systems from plumbing and HVAC to steam, air, and gas infrastructure. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform repairs on domestic water, chilled water, hot water, steam pipe, and ductwork insulation

  • Perform preventive maintenance on plumbing and related systems, including air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems
  • Maintain, repair, and install plumbing systems and associated fixtures/equipment, including lab drainage, sinks, toilets, valves, and piping
  • Cut, thread, assemble, and install piping; caulk joints, connect valves, test and inspect installations for leaks or defects
  • Install and maintain gas, water, and sanitary fixtures with appropriate hangers, supports, and foundations
  • Diagnose and repair a wide variety of plumbing and mechanical issues, including complex or non-standard repairs
  • Support maintenance and troubleshooting of secondary electrical systems (up to 600 VAC), including conduit, breakers, switches, panels, motors, and control circuits
  • Assist with HVAC-related preventive maintenance and repairs, such as replacing temperature controls, thermostats, humidity sensors, and regulators

  • Troubleshoot and repair building steam systems and equipment, including boilers, pumps, turbines, condensate systems, and air compressors
  • Collaborate with other trades (electrical, HVAC, mechanical) to develop integrated solutions for multi-system issues
  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations to ensure compliance
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions, even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor
  • Must participate in the quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks
  • Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the mechanical insulation (pipe insulation) skills with a secondary trade set in plumbing, electrical and HVAC, if possible
  • NC plumbing license preferred, or reciprocal, or local jurisdiction journeyman plumber certification

  • CFC certification or the ability to obtain certification
  • Solid working knowledge of plumbing, HVAC, and electrical system operations. Capable of diagnosing, troubleshooting, and performing repairs on a variety of systems, including boilers, steam lines, pumps, condensate receivers, fan turbines, air compressors, pressure-reducing stations, water softeners, and piping insulation
