The Geologist will assist in overseeing groundwater and gas monitoring programs, manage environmental compliance activities, and supports landfill operations. This role ensures regulatory requirements are met, provides technical oversight, and works closely with consultants, regulatory agencies, and internal teams.

Responsibilities of Position:



  • Provide oversight of groundwater monitoring systems and consultants to ensure water quality monitoring around active and closed landfills
  • Manage and review consultant reports; act as Project Manager for hydrogeologic investigations related to landfill expansions
  • Generate and manage purchase orders
  • Assist with overseeing explosive gas monitoring programs to ensure safety and compliance
  • Assist with establishing pathways for closed sites to transition out of post-closure care at the end of the regulatory 30-year period
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental regulations, permits, and standards
  • Prepare, review, and submit required environmental reports to internal stakeholders and external regulatory agencies
  • Maintain environmental data and records in company software systems; generate compliance summaries and trends analysis
  • Plan, organize, and secure environmental permits and regulatory approvals, preparing all related documentation
  • Assist with developing, coordinate, and oversee testing programs, investigations, assessments, and technical reporting
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with regulatory agencies overseeing landfill operations
  • Utilize the compliance tracking software monthly to ensure tasks are completed on time and action plans are implemented for pending deadlines
  • Assist with overseeing Underground Storage Tank (UST) operations and removals, as well as public water supply systems
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support environmental compliance and operational excellence



Supervisory Responsibility:



  • This position will not manage employees



Skills & Abilities Needed for Position:



  • Occasional travel is required for site visits, meetings, and regulatory inspections
  • Proficiency with environmental data management software and reporting tools
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication; skilled in preparing reports, documentation, and presenting information to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to assess environmental issues, develop practical solutions, and implement corrective actions
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with internal teams, consultants, and external regulators
  • Ensures accuracy and thoroughness in reporting, compliance reviews, and documentation



Experience & Knowledge Needed for Position:



  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in landfill operations, environmental compliance, regulatory oversight or relevant field required
  • Strong knowledge of groundwater monitoring, gas monitoring, and UST management preferred



Physical Requirements in a Regular Workday:



  • Rarely lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling a max of 10 lbs
  • Rarely working outside in changing temperatures, wet/humid conditions
  • Rarely working in areas of dust, odors, mist, gases, and other airborne matter
  • Frequently sitting
  • Rarely standing/walking



Additional Working Conditions/Aspects:



  • Possible exposure to high traffic conditions and/or tight driving areas
  • Exposure to residential and commercial waste
  • Ability to travel between offices, as required
  • Ability to work flexible hours; expected to work nights and weekends as needed
  • Legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Valid driver's license (if applicable)
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment testing
  • Must be able to read and speak the English language
