Under the direction of the Director of Multicultural Services at Student Health & Counseling Services (SHCS), this position coordinates and develops partnerships with two student service units and Ethnic or Area Studies Departments/Programs, to provide regular consultation and effective case management of student situations. This work requires analysis of unique and complex issues. This Community Counselor position works with the Center for African Diaspora and the Educational Opportunity Program and provides the following services to these units; Conduct assessments, respond to student needs, and make referrals to campus resources. Conduct outreach to students, faculty and staff about distressed and distressing students and other mental health issues. Provide consultation to students, faculty, and staff. Provide intake evaluation, treatment planning, crisis intervention, case management, and individual and group counseling and psychotherapy, with referrals to others as needed. Provides campus programs on education, multicultural concerns and prevention, may provide supervision and training to Counseling Services trainees in an APA accredited internship and APPIC-member postdoctoral program. This position works closely with the staff of partner units and other Community Advising Network (CAN) Community Counselors. Works as part of a multidisciplinary team. Complies with professional requirements of SHCS and UC Davis policies and procedures as well as all State and Federal professional legal requirements. Department Overview Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) provides primary care, mental health, acute care, laboratory, pharmacy, optometry, health education and counseling services to registered UC Davis students. SHCS serves approximately 300 patients per day during the school year. The mission is to provide campus health and wellness resources that enable students to successfully achieve their academic goals and life-long wellness. SHCS has approximately 200 staff including managers, senior professionals, professional and support staff, student employees, interns and post doc residents. SHCS is accredited by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care), IACS (International Association for Counseling Services), and APA (American Psychological Association). SHCS mental health staff are an educationally diverse group of licensed psychologists, psychiatrists, masters-level therapists, and pre-and post-doctoral trainees, dedicated to assisting students and enriching the university community by providing individual counseling, group services, educational programs, psychological consultation, workshops, and other types of outreach services. Counseling services are offered at no cost to registered students. Community Counselors are members of the CS' CAN Program staff, who assist students, including those from underserved populations, in coping with multiple and intersecting areas of wellness. This includes a holistic approach to areas of concern related to personal, social, academic and career choices, family issues, and other stress factors, i.e., financial and work-school balance. Each Community Counselor works closely with the CS Director of Multicultural Services and the other Community Counselors. Partner units within the Community Advising Network include: African American and African Studies Asian American Studies Chicana/o Studies Cross Cultural Center Educational Opportunity Program Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual Resource Center Middle East/South Asia Studies Program Native American Studies Services for International Students and Scholars Student Recruitment and Retention Center Transfer, Reentry, Veterans Center Women's Resources and Research Center The partner unit directors or designee will participate with the CS Director of Multicultural Services in the recruitment and performance evaluation process for the Community Counselor assigned to their unit.
