HJF is seeking a BioRepository Shipping and Receiving Technician to perform laboratory procedures to assist supervisors with various testing, assays, and experiments. Provides support in various areas of a laboratory as needed. Complies with laboratory quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) plans and procedures.

This position will be in support of Specimen Processing Laboratory and BioRepository (SPL/BioR)/Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB). The incumbent will join a dynamic Team of individuals in the Specimen Processing Laboratory and BioRepository (SPL/BioR) responsible for processing and archiving samples in support of IRB-approved clinical trials conducted by the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB), U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP), the Emerging Infectious Diseases Branch (EIDB), and the Infectious Disease Clinical Research Program (IDCRP). The incumbent will also be responsible for facility supplies/materials inventory, receiving incoming shipments, verifying contents with purchasing information and storing materials as required. The incumbent will also work with the BioR Supervisor to properly accession incoming shipments for archival storage and accurately maintain the BioRepository's freezer inventory within FreezerWorks and other specimen management systems as required. The incumbent will capture data, and perform all the tasks in the BioR in strict accordance with Biobanking Best Practices, (NIH and ISBER), Standard Operating Procedures, Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP), and accrediting agencies as required.

  • Performs research projects, including the collection and organization of data. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining reagent and supplies inventories, placing and tracking orders, performing weekly or as needed reagent/materials inventories and accessioning incoming orders, reconciling and maintaining all related paperwork. Will work with the Laboratory Manager and Laboratory Director to properly track and manage supplies orders for budgeting purposes.
  • Properly accessions incoming specimen shipments for archival storage, performing 100% verification of specimens received with the shipping manifest. Works with the BioR Supervisor to maintain accurate specimen inventories in FreezerWorks for all incoming and outgoing specimens shipments.
  • Properly packages and ships samples to laboratories/collaborators as required per Internal Air Transportation Association (IATA) standards and 49 CFR.
  • Performs routine daily, weekly, monthly, annual maintenance on laboratory equipment, and BioR inventory as required by SOPs.
  • Works with the BioR Supervisor and BioR Technicians to maintain accurate freezer inventories and storage space by performing defragmentation of freezers when required.
  • Performs specimen processing (serum, plasma, PBMC, leukopak) in support of IRB-approved clinical trials as needed when the facility receives a high number of specimens for processing.
  • Maintains and promotes a clean, safe work environment. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment as designated for laboratory and Bio-repository areas.
  • Responsible for performing assigned tasks in accordance with all applicable safety regulations and instructions.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Associate's Degree required. Bachelor's Degree in a related scientific field preferred.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years' experience required


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Familiarity with laboratory supplies and equipment preferred. Ability to work in a fast-paced research environment; flexibility to handle a variety of tasks and shift priorities as necessary.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with local and international external collaborators in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Proficiency in standard Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel) required.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.


Compensation



  • The hourly pay range for this position is $18.25-$23.00. Actual hourly pay will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
