Position Summary

Primary responsibilities are to assist the Safety and Security department in maintaining a safe, healthy, accident-free work environment through performing safety audits and inspections, providing safety education and coaching to employees, and assisting with conducting and/or coordinating safety training. The Safety Specialist will ensure employee compliance with Prince William Water's safety standards and work within the guidelines of governmental regulations. The position also performs technical work related to regulatory requirements and various administrative duties. Overall goals are set, and the worker assists in determining the specific tasks and assignments to be performed. Demonstrates a commitment and supports a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Position Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions

- Perform safety and security audits and inspect facilities, machinery, and equipment to identify and correct potential hazards or vulnerabilities and ensure safety regulation compliance.
- Investigate accidents, near-miss incidents, and occupational injuries to determine causes and implement preventive measures.
- Conduct, coordinate, and assist in developing worker training in safety regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment.
- Provide safety education and coaching to office and field personnel.
- Assist in recording and maintaining training data, safety audits, and other leading indicators related to compliance recordkeeping and annual goals.
- Assist with developing written safety procedures by inspecting and reviewing areas, equipment, processes, and work activities.
- Assist in developing Job Hazard Analysis for new equipment and non-routine tasks.
- Ensure Prince William Water's emergency and safety equipment is inspected.
- Identify industry practices via research and lead the implementation for continuous improvement to reduce work process risks, raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices.
- Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on safety initiatives and necessary changes.
- Assist in compiling and submitting accident reports required by regulatory agencies, including OSHA 300 Recordkeeping.
- Assist with the administration of the drug and alcohol program, including random drug testing and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements.
- Assist in conducting regular safety audits and inspections of divisions/departments, including inspecting facilities, worksites, equipment, work practices, and safety devices using job site safety inspection reports to ensure compliance with required workplace safety standards, regulations, and Prince William Water policies.
- Work within company policy as outlined in the Safety Program and OSHA Safety rules.
- Operate a Prince William Water Vehicle.
- May be deemed essential at any time.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Essential Skills and Experience

Essential Competencies:
- Knowledge of Occupational Safety, health, and engineering principles, understanding of the theory behind machine guarding and Lockout/Tag-out electrical safety, and knowledge of regulatory compliance laws and the ability to apply such knowledge.
- Knowledge of and adept at using modern office practices, computer equipment, and software applications related to assignments, including Microsoft Office products (Word and Excel), appropriate safety precautions, procedures, practices, and regulations.
- Ability to demonstrate effective communication skills, manage multiple projects, and have strong training and interpersonal skills. Exhibit positivity, passion for the safety of others, integrity, and accountability.
Minimum Education and Work Experience:
- Associate's degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Safety and Health, Safety or Environmental Management, and Safety or Environmental Science or related field.
- At least three years of experience assisting and supporting the development, implementation, training, administration, and evaluation of occupational health, safety, and loss control programs.
- Or a combination of education and experience described above.
Required Licenses/Certifications and Other Special Requirements:
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license consistent with Prince William Water policy requirements.
- Required to work on-call.
