The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal manages the planning, designing, policy development, implementation, and management of programs addressing occupational safety, environmental safety, industrial hygiene concerns, chemical waste management and fire life safety regulations. The mission of Environmental Health and Safety is to collaborate with George Washington University campus community to ensure the university complies with occupational safety, environmental safety, laboratory biological and chemical safety, and fire and life safety regulations. This position reports directly to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal provides leadership and support to the Environmental Health and Safety team and to university departments on regulatory compliance issues involving safety. The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal is responsible for overseeing the Biological Safety Level 3 facility and the select agent program. Direct supervision is provided to Environmental Health and Safety Technicians and Specialists. The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal provides support to the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and serves as the focal point of contact for
EHS when the Director is not available.
The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal performs various regular and random occupational, environmental, and fire life safety inspections of residence halls, academic, and administrative buildings to ensure compliance with university policies, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations. The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal is also responsible for documenting inspections and assigning appropriate staff to address any health and safety deficiencies that are noted.
In coordination with the Facilities Planning, Construction & Management (
FPCM) (Office of Life Safety) and the Office of the Vice President for Research (Office of Laboratory Safety), the Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal manages and conducts regular and random inspections of university laboratories, research centers, and the medical school to ensure compliance with university policies, and local, state, and federal laws and regulations on the handling and storage of biological and chemical agents, hazardous substances, and adherence to the select agent program.
The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal provides technical expertise and support for all university departments on regulatory compliance issues in occupational safety, environmental safety, laboratory biological and chemical safety, and fire life safety. The position provides advice, counsel and guidance to the campus community on health and safety matters. This includes interpreting policies and procedures, conducting job safety analysis, review all research proposals to determine proper risk assessments have been conducted, and makes recommendations for safe laboratory practices.
In coordination with
FPCM, the Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal researches, evaluates and interprets safety standards and building codes established by local and federal government regulatory agencies. Also, in coordination with
FPCM and the GW Police Department develops building emergency evacuation plans for all university facilities.
The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal of
EHS also serves as the University Fire Marshal. Under the general direction of the Environment Health & Safety Director, the Fire Marshal (FM) is responsible for developing and implementing integrated fire and life safety programs to protect faculty, staff, students and the general public at The George Washington University.
The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal develops, manages and directs the day-to-day university-wide occupational and environmental health and safety, and fire safety training and awareness programs. Manages and conducts biological and chemical, fire and emergency preparedness training and seminars for university laboratory, research centers, and medical school faculty, staff, and students.
The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal directs investigations and documents all accidents and incidents involving occupational and environmental, health safety, fire safety, and bio safety violations, or potential safety violations. Makes recommendations for corrective actions and ensures implementation of corrective actions.
The Assistant Director, Environmental Health & Safety and Fire Marshal assists the Director of
EHS in developing and managing the annual operating budget and requests for Environmental Health and Safety.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Coordinate, confirm and oversee waste schedule pickup for all waste streams. Sign waste manifests as needed.
- Develop, implement and conduct educational and informational programs for the university community that enhance employee health and safety, property preservation and protection of the environment.
- Provide any related environmental health and safety training for faculty, staff and students as needed.
- Serve as a subject matter resource for university units and projects relating to programs and services provided by Environmental Health & Safety.
- Respond to campus incidents such as accidents, injuries or other emergencies and perform any required investigations and provide necessary reporting.
- Respond to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) concerns in campus buildings. Provide expert assessment and recommendations for mitigation and report findings to Facilities Planning, Construction, and Management (FPCM) leadership.
- Provide hot work and burn permits on campus when requested by Facilities or outside contractor staff.
- Provide expert guidance and assistance relating to design and construction of projects as it relates to fire, life safety, EPA and OSHA.
- Accompany inspectors or vendors on inspections and campus work and provide access to necessary buildings and equipment.
- Participate training and professional development opportunities in order to enhance skills.
- Provide orientation and mentor new EHS staff member upon hiring. Provide job overview and familiarize them with daily operations, equipment, campus orientation and emergency response procedures.
- Take immediate action where imminent dangers to life, health, or property are impacting campus people, property or the environment.
- In the absence of the EHS Director, serve as primary point of contact and chief safety officer for university safety operations.
