| Position Summary |
This position will serve as Serology Laboratory Lead and will assist the Laboratory Manager in assuring the quality system and laboratory are maintained. Incumbent will lead Diagnostic testing in the absence of a manager as well as perform a variety of diagnostic tests for the detection of antibodies in serum and viruses, bacteria, fungi, and prions from animal tissues. They will accurately record/interpret test results and prepare test reports for clients. Incumbent will consult with veterinarians, pathologists, and clinicians regarding the submission of specimens, appropriateness of tests, and interpretation of results. |
| Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
- Various computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat) and willingness to learn new software
- Knowledge and understanding of current version of AAVLD Requirements for an Accredited Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and the ISO17025 standard
- Plan/prioritize tasks and function independently in sequential and logical manner
- Provide friendly customer service and interact routinely with technical and professional staff throughout laboratory, AVDL clients and professional staff
- Verbal and written communication skills: develop, write and edit quality system documents
- Basic knowledge on virology and serology tests

Diagnostic Testing and Reporting
- Lead Diagnostic testing in the absence of a manager
- Perform a variety of diagnostic tests for the detection of antibodies and antigen in serum
- Perform a variety of diagnostic tests for the detection of viruses in serum and animal tissues
- Work content will include receiving/recording samples; preparing samples for testing; performing a wide variety of diagnostic tests including but not limited to: ELISA, direct & indirect fluorescence assay
- Conduct simple troubleshooting of test procedures to assure accuracy of results
- Accurately record/interpret test results and prepare test reports for clients

- Assist in Research and Development of new diagnostic tests
- Prepare reagents, maintain inventory, and assure proper equipment maintenance
- Order laboratory supplies and reagents and validate new lots for laboratory use.

| Duties/Responsibilities |
Perform Bovine Spongiform Encephalitis (BSE) and Chronic Wasting Sample organization and processing:
- Lead Coordination tissue processing and testing to meet turnaround times
- Maintain BSE equipment and calibration plates
- Communicate with USDA representatives to ensure BSE submissions are entered into VSLS
- Serve as primary liaison with USDA, NVSL, and DNR for submissions, VSLS entries, initial reactors, and confirmatory testing protocols.

- Lead QC/QA activities for the Serology/Virology sections, analyze control data, identify trends, and implement corrective actions
- Manage Data entry of client and sample information
- Assist the laboratory manager in reviewing/revising standard operating procedures, maintaining the quality system, maintaining inventory and assuring general laboratory cleanliness. \
- Prepare media, buffers and reagents
- Consult with submitting veterinarians, pathologists and clinicians regarding the submission of specimens, appropriateness of tests, and interpretation of test results
- Package and ship diagnostic specimens to outside labs: create shipping labels and maintain send out records

- Assist with document management, including scanning and filing
- Lead training, mentoring, and technical oversight to lab staff, students, and trainees; perform competency assessments.

- Assume managerial tasks in the instance the lab manager is absent
