A Brief Overview

The Optical Neuroimaging Laboratory at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has an open position for a research technician. Our preclinical research focuses on improving the understanding of pediatric neuronal injury using optical neuroimaging and animal models of stroke, hypoxia, and other diseases. Tasks involved with this posting include, but are not limited to (1) performing procedures on small and large animals, (2) acquiring and analyzing neuroimaging data, (3) assisting with analysis of data collected, and (4) managing regulatory documentation associated with research studies.

We are seeking well-rounded individuals with prominent organizational, communication, time-management, and critical thinking skills. Applicants should be willing to work in both a team and independently and have the ability to conduct detailed translational research protocols with minimal supervision. Prior lab experience in preclinical vertebrate studies with at least 1 year of prior hands-on experience working with mice, including mouse husbandry, breeding, and comfort with in vivo surgery, is strongly preferred. Preferred skills: knowledge of computer programs including Matlab, RedCap, and Office. The research assistant will learn to operate relevant optical instrumentation and software. A willingness to learn data analysis/data processing is important. The position is contingent on continued funding.

What you will do

  • Independently perform small animal surgical and imaging procedures.
  • Manage and organize laboratory records and document procedures in keeping with relevant regulations.
  • Assist with analysis of optical neuroimaging data.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED - Required
  • Bachelor's Degree in biology, neuroscience, or related field (completed or expected prior to start date) Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Required
  • At least one (1) year of prior vertebrate animal laboratory experience Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Intermediate understanding of lab procedures, protocols, and equipment. Prior knowledge of computer programs including Matlab, RedCap, and Office
  • Basic exposure to lab specific experiments / techniques and scientific analysis
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Solid critical thinking / problem-solving skills
  • Solid analytical skills
