Position description

Assistant or Associate Specialist- Goldberg Lab

Department of Physiology

University of California, San Francisco

This position will require mammalian cell culture and associated techniques like CRISPR/Cas9 gene expression control, pharmacological treatments, transfection, cloning, and cell passaging. Experiments will also require molecular and biochemical analyses of these cell culture experiments, including gene expression by RT-PCR, western blot, mass spectrometry to be run by a collaborator, and transcriptomics, as well as the necessary sample preparation techniques needed to perform these analyses. the candidate will be responsible for managing multiple cell lines simultaneously. The candidate will be trained in new techniques and will plan experiments in collaboration with other lab members and Dr. Goldberg, with the expectation that they become increasingly independent throughout the course of the appointment. The candidate will be trained in relevant mouse handling and techniques for in vivo experiments, genotyping, and colony management. The candidate will be expected to present at lab meetings and these presentations must include updates on experimental progress, figures of data, data interpretation, and plans for upcoming experiments. The candidate is also expected to participate in general lab responsibilities like helping other lab members with experiments, lab cleaning, supply monitoring and ordering. The candidate will also be required to maintain a lab notebook and data storage according to lab organizational rules.

Required Qualifications:



  • The candidate must have experience with cell culture and molecular biology approaches (CRISPR, qPCR, plasmid design/construction).
  • Assistant Specialist- Master's degree or a bachelor's degree in biological science disciple with three or more years of hands-on basic science research experience.
  • Associate Specialist- Master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of relevant experience.
  • The candidate must have willingness to work with mice.
  • The candidate must have experience with data analysis software.
  • Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment.
  • Candidate's CV must state qualification (or if pending) upon submission.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • A MS degree in a biological sciences discipline that required hands-on basic science research as part of the degree program.
  • Highly organized, experience giving presentations, collaborative with other lab members, experience with genome engineering software, microscopy experience, western blot experience, mass spectrometry sample prep.
