Job description
Position Purpose:
The Safety and Risk Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety and risk management programs to ensure the protection of employees, property, and organizational assets. This role involves identifying and analyzing potential risks and hazards, implementing mitigation strategies, and ensuring the organization complies with all relevant safety and risk-related regulations. The manager will foster a strong safety culture and lead the organization's efforts in loss prevention, claims management, and emergency preparedness.
Key duties and responsibilities
* Program development and management: Design, implement, and manage the organization's overall safety and risk management programs, policies, and procedures. This includes creating an Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP) tailored to the company's specific needs.
* Risk assessment and analysis: Conduct regular risk assessments and evaluations to identify potential hazards and vulnerabilities across all operational areas. Analyze loss data, incident reports, and industry trends to identify patterns and prioritize areas for attention.
* Compliance and reporting: Stay up-to-date on all local, state, and federal regulations, such as OSHA, EPA, and other industry-specific standards. Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies and senior management, detailing risk exposure and program effectiveness.
Training and education: Develop and deliver safety training programs and materials for all employees, from new hires to managers. Provide ongoing education to build a company-wide culture of safety and risk awareness.
* Incident and claims management: Oversee the investigation of all accidents, injuries, and other incidents to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions. Manage workers' compensation and liability claims, acting as the primary liaison with insurance carriers and legal counsel.
* Emergency preparedness: Create and maintain a robust emergency response and disaster recovery plan. Organize and conduct emergency drills and evacuation exercises.
* Cross-functional collaboration: Partner with other departments, including Human Resources, Legal, and Operations, to ensure that safety and risk management practices are integrated into all business activities.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Risk Management, Environmental Health, Business Administration, or a related field.
Experience
* A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in safety, risk management, or a related field.
* Experience in the longshoreman, healthcare, manufacturing, construction or similar sector is highly desirable.
* Proven experience in developing and implementing comprehensive safety and risk management programs.
Certifications (Preferred)
* Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
* Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
* OSHA 30-Hour Certification
