Job Objective: Assist customers with their shopping needs. Check out customers when their shopping experience is completed. Perform management-level duties as assigned or in the absence of store management.

Essential Functions:



  • Process merchandise efficiently according to store standards
  • Pricing unmarked items of merchandise
  • Hang clothing as instructed
  • Stock racks, shelves, counters or tables with merchandise
  • Clean shelves, counters or tables
  • Ring up purchases for customers
  • Operate cash register, accepting payment and making change
  • Wrap or bag merchandise for customers
  • Help set up displays and arranges merchandise to promote sales
  • Maintain good customer relations by giving prompt, courteous assistance to customers
  • Follow through on rotating and outdating merchandise
  • Insure proper use of assigned equipment
  • Assure that the building and grounds are kept clean of trash and donated items
  • Maintain and clean restrooms, foyer, trash, windows and floors
  • Report complaints, damages and concern to management
  • Perform management duties as directed by the store manager including, but not limited to:

    • Supervise store employees and volunteers
    • Schedule employees
    • Complete banking transactions





Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school graduate or equivalent.

Experience: Experience with retail sales, ideally in a thrift store setting; management experience preferred.

Skills/Abilities:



  • Must be able multi-task
  • Must be able to communicate well with others
  • Must be able to work with little or no supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions and employee manuals
  • Ability to write routine reports and complete paperwork
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and employees
  • Ability to handle cash, make change, and operate a cash register
  • Ability to perform basic math functions



Supervisory Duties: As assigned or in the absence of store management

Physical Requirements: Includes sitting, climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 75 pounds; both outdoor and indoor navigation of settings, and standing and/or walking up to 12 hours per day. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this job.

Travel: None

Driving: Yes. Must possess a valid driver's license from the state of residence. Must be approved through The Salvation Army Fleet Safety Program to drive either a Salvation Army or personal vehicle on Salvation Army business.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a typical retail store setting; position be required to work on Saturday
