About the College/Unit/Department
The General Accounting Department is responsible for the installation and administrative direction of all general accounting records and procedures, the preparation and interpretation of all external financial reports, and the preparation and interpretation of all internal financial reports concerning the university as a whole. This responsibility does not preclude departmental or budgetary units from preparing internal accounting reports. This department is also responsible for the preparation of the indirect cost rate proposal applicable to contracts, grants, and agreements and for assisting in any required rate negotiation.

Position Summary
The Director of Accounting is responsible for overall leadership and operation of the Accounting Department in accordance with USG and UGA policies and procedures and assessing the department's accomplishments each year. This position directs departmental efforts to improve processes by analyzing existing systems and procedures, identifying more efficient and effective solutions, and leading Accounting's involvement in implementation. Areas of responsibility include the University's chart of accounts structure, financial reporting under Georgia state budget (fund) basis and GASB basis, continuous audit reporting, sales tax reporting, tax exempt bond compliance, unrelated business income tax reporting, and bank account reconciliations and training on Accounting related topics, Handles personnel issues of the Accounting staff such as interviewing, hiring, training, coordinating, assigning and reviewing work, conducting annual performance evaluations, salary increases, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
In-depth knowledge and experience with generally acceptable accounting principles and Governmental Accounting Standards.
- Knowledge of federal and other sponsor regulations and guidelines governing grants and contract administration.
- Knowledge of financial systems and the ability to extract and analyze financial data.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
