Body Hardware Lab Technician SBU

The Body Hardware Lab Technician is responsible for the design and fabrication of test fixtures to conduct vehicle body closures and structures testing including hood, side door, liftgate, swing gate. The Technician will conduct fatigue and ultimate testing, monitor tests at regular intervals and adjust tests parameters including, controller, pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical fixturing. The Body Hardware Lab Technician will also be responsible for:



  • Build up and teardown of closures and structures tests.
  • Build front and rear cradle modules.
  • Wheel/tire assemblies.
  • Logging, reporting, and working with test engineers and customers at each phase of the test.
  • Support general operations of the test lab.

Basic Qualifications:



  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in fabrication of fixtures
  • Knowledge of vehicle components and be able to remove and install parts associated with all vehicle closure, body and chassis assemblies
  • Experience data recording - test observations, shift news and email communication
  • Experience in MIG/TIG welding and in fabrication with the use of a milling machine, drill press, band saw, lathe, shear, hole punch, sheet metal brake and other machining equipment
  • Must own and be familiar with a variety of tools (hand, bench and machine)
  • Good communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment (unionized) and work autonomously based on provided instructions
  • Basic computer & troubleshooting skills
  • Must be able to work off-shifts and weekends


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Minimum 3 years' experience in fabrication of fixtures
  • Prior working knowledge of Accelerometers, String Pots and Load Cells
  • 3 years of experience as mechanic or State Certifications in disciplines of Vehicle Body Closures, Brakes/Steering or Suspension Systems and Components
  • Able to read and understand CAD drawings and experience with PCs and Windows operating environments
  • Experience and familiarity with transducers and closed loop controls
