Technician, Network and Video Technologies

Description The Technician, Network and Video Technologies performs a variety of professional technical assistance for the college’s network and phone systems; provides a variety of professional technical assistance for complex audio video/control systems and installations; helps manage day to day operations of the TV studio and videoconferencing rooms. Creates and assists in the production of audio-visual promotional materials.
Examples of Duties Essential Functions:
Assists the network administrator to keep critical network and phone infrastructure operating on all properties. Assists with design, installation, maintenance, and programming of complex audio and video control systems. Assists and supports the training of college personnel and students in the related areas of classroom and video technology. Assists and supports faculty in the classroom as technology issues arise. Assists with the operations of videoconferencing (Highway) labs and programs; and maintains a schedule for the rooms. Assists with the operations of Hy Flex classrooms. Installs, maintains, and upgrades assigned servers, computers, network, and audio video equipment. Responds to and answers complex questions about networking, audio video systems, control systems, computer systems, software programs, and related equipment. Documents and records problems, solutions, programs and procedures. Assists with the installation and maintenance of the IP camera and security system. Assists with the maintenance of the access control system, public address system, and phone system. Helps faculty and staff with phone issues. Diagnoses and analyzes WAN related problems and develops and implements solutions; resolves immediate hardware and firmware issues; notifies users of system down time. Assists with the operation of the college’s television studio including assisting with program development, video recording, editing, digital effects, post-production, promotion and scheduling. Marginal Functions: Participates in professional development and required employee training. Serves on college committees, attend staff development and training programs and support college functions. Assists other technicians and departments when requested. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Working Conditions Knowledge of: Computer networking Cisco, Aruba and Dell networking equipment Extron, Crestron, and Biamp audio video and control equipment VoIP and analog phone systems Video components and how they work together. Operation and maintenance computer equipment. Occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions. Methods, materials and equipment used in the installation, maintenance, testing and repair of computers and peripheral equipment. Components and parts used in modern computer equipment. Cable connections and specs. Basic low and high voltage electrical knowledge Basic knowledge of surveillance and access control systems A variety of computer software programs and programming languages. Video editing systems Graphic design Lighting and sound set-up and operation best practices. Sound mixing and editing Principles and procedures of record keeping. Basic mathematical calculations. English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation Ability to: Learn and utilize general and specialized software pertaining to job. Operate assigned equipment necessary for position. Troubleshoot problems as they occur Work independently in the absence of supervision. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Follow all safety rules and regulations of the college. Operate a variety of equipment in a safe and effective manner. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Environmental Conditions: The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office and classroom workspace, and working closely with others.
The employee must maintain the office and teaching environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment. Physical Conditions: Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following; standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, reaching above shoulder, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.
The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously.
Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.
Scheduling Conditions: This is a full-time, 12-month position, which requires the employee to be on campus or at an approved alternate location for at least thirty-six hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 8: 00am-5: 00pm, and Friday, 8: 00am-12: 00pm. This position generally works daytime hours, but has the potential for occasional evening or weekend hours.
Traveling Conditions: Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. Out of state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences.
Experience and Training Experience: Two years of prior experience in network, computer systems support, electronics or related area required. Two years of experience working with Cisco, Aruba, Extron, Crestron, Biamp, or related equipment is preferred. Training: An Associate degree from an accredited college with major course work in computer programming, information systems, networking, cyber security or engineering technology, is required. Extron and Biamp certifications are preferred.
