About the Role

The AI Governance Lead will be responsible for evolving and managing Symetra's framework governing the ethical, transparent, secure, and compliant use of artificial intelligence (AI). This role will ensure AI initiatives align with company values, other internal governance structures, regulatory requirements, and responsible innovation practices. The individual will serve as a trusted advisor to leadership, bridging technical, ethical, and regulatory perspectives.

What you will do



  • Design, implement, and maintain a comprehensive AI governance framework, policies, procedures, and standards that ensure responsible AI practices across the enterprise.


  • Establish and maintain processes for risk identification, assessment, and mitigation in the organization's AI projects.
  • Evaluate existing, new, and proposed AI laws, regulations, and standards against existing company governance practices and identify gaps. Lead gap remediation activities in collaboration with other areas.
  • Partner with Law, Compliance, Data, Information Security, and Vendor Management teams to identify, monitor, manage, and report on risks associated with AI deployment.
  • Collaborate with Vendor Management and Procurement to identify potential instances of AI usage during the procurement process and to ensure appropriate vendor oversight related to AI.
  • Maintain a centralized inventory of AI use cases. Ensure regular review and updates are performed and that each item in the inventory is regularly subjected to risk assessment before adoption, upon material changes, and/or according to a regular cadence.
  • Ensure that model owners create proper documentation of AI tools being used including appropriate versioning and auditability.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure timely and thorough completion of regulatory filings and requests related to AI governance.
  • Ensure readiness for AI-related regulatory reviews by maintaining appropriate documentation of governance activities.
  • Collaborate with Data, Technology, Information Security, and Symetra's various business units who utilize AI to embed governance into the AI lifecycle and technology workflows.
  • Serve as an advisor to senior leadership on AI governance best practices and represent Symetra in industry forums related to AI governance.
  • Organize and facilitate AI Governance Committee meetings and ensure proper reporting templates and packages are designed, utilized, and retained for documentation purposes.
  • Establish mechanisms for continuous monitoring, auditing, and evaluation of AI use cases in production.
  • Work with the Data team to conduct model reviews, bias testing, and/or ethical reviews of AI models and use cases.
  • Develop reporting mechanisms to track compliance and performance of AI systems.
  • Participate in the development of awareness and training programs on responsible AI usage for technical and business stakeholders.
  • In partnership with Compliance, stay informed on emerging AI legislation, industry trends, and best practices to proactively adapt governance frameworks.

Compensation

Salary Range:$113,700 - $189,400 plus eligibility for annual bonus programs

Who you are



  • College degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in risk management, data governance, compliance, or an AI- related domain.
  • 8-10 years of cumulative, relevant experience.
  • Understanding of AI technologies, their applications, and associated risks.
  • Hand-on experience utilizing a variety of AI tools.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical and regulatory concepts into business language.
  • Knowledge of AI regulations and standards for life insurance companies (NAIC, Colorado, NY DFS, etc.)
  • Experience in developing or managing governance programs in highly regulated industries such as insurance.
  • Familiarity with data privacy, cybersecurity, and/or model validation and model risk management practices.
  • Certification in AI ethics, governance, or compliance frameworks is a plus.
  • High school diploma required.
