Join our team as a Director of the Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO)!
This is a hybrid role being onsite at HQ in Maple Plain, MN on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
The Director of the Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO) is a senior leadership role responsible for building and leading Protolabs' enterprise-wide program management discipline. This position will establish a lightweight governance framework to ensure the effective prioritization, funding, and execution of strategic initiatives that advance Protolabs' business goals. Reporting to the Chief Technology and AI Officer, the ePMO Director will lead the strategic planning and capital prioritization process, develop the Protolabs Delivery Framework (PDF), oversee portfolio and program performance, and cultivate a Community of Practice (CoP) to enhance project management capability across all functions.

You will
  • Enterprise Strategy & Governance
  • Lead the development and implementation of the Protolabs Delivery Framework - establishing standard methodologies, templates, and governance for program and project execution
  • Partner with the CTAIO, CFO, and Executive Leadership Team to run the annual strategic and capital planning process
  • Chair the Program Review Board and oversee stage-gate and governance processes for all enterprise programs
  • Maintain enterprise visibility into the strategic portfolio, ensuring alignment with Protolabs' business strategies
Program & Portfolio Management
  • Oversee a portfolio of enterprise initiatives spanning technology, operations, manufacturing, customer experience, and back-office functions
  • Drive consistent reporting on scope, schedule, budget, risks, and issues through standardized dashboards and executive scorecards
  • Partner with Finance to manage capital budgets, forecast accuracy, and benefits realization
  • Implement time tracking and resource management practices to optimize delivery capacity and capital capitalization
Community of Practice & Capability Building
  • Build and lead a Project Management Community of Practice (CoP) across business functions
  • Define project manager competencies, training paths, and performance standards.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring for project and program managers across Protolabs
Tools, Technology, & Reporting
  • Evaluate, select, and manage enterprise Program & Portfolio Management (PPM) tools to support program tracking, resource management, and reporting
  • Integrate portfolio data with enterprise systems (ERP, HRIS, financial systems) for transparency
  • Establish and track key delivery metrics - including on-time delivery, budget adherence, risk mitigation effectiveness, and benefits realization
Leadership & Change Enablement
  • Serve as a change leader driving accountability, cross-functional collaboration, and outcome-focused delivery
  • Communicate portfolio status and insights to senior executives and the Board
  • Cultivate a culture of transparency, empowerment, and continuous improvement
What it takes
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 10 or more years of progressive experience in project, program, or portfolio management
  • 5 or more years of people leadership experience managing enterprise PMOs or cross-functional portfolios
  • Proven experience developing governance frameworks, capital planning processes, and strategic prioritization models
  • Experience with enterprise delivery frameworks (Agile, hybrid, or waterfall) and transformation programs
  • Familiarity with PPM tools (Planview, Smartsheet, Project Online, Jira Align, or similar)
  • Demonstrated success in developing and leading a project management community or center of excellence
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strategic thinker with strong financial acumen and business judgment
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and executive communication skills
  • Data-driven approach to portfolio management
  • Strong understanding of technology-enabled business transformation
  • Collaborative leadership style with the ability to manage through change
Preferred Qualifications:
  • PMP, PgMP, or PfMP (PMI)
  • SAFe Program Consultant (SPC) or equivalent Agile certification
  • Change management certification (e.g., Prosci)
Success Measures
  • Delivery of a fully operational Protolabs Delivery Framework within 12 months
  • Establishment of enterprise portfolio reporting for all strategic initiatives
  • Reduction in schedule and budget variance across programs
  • Positive stakeholder satisfaction and increased PM capability maturity
  • Deployment of an enterprise PPM tool integrated with financial and time tracking systems

Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
