Position SummaryAt the University of New Mexico, the College Enrichment Program (CEP) continues its long-standing commitment to supporting students-especially those from underrepresented, first-generation, and rural backgrounds. Since 1969, CEP has provided holistic guidance, mentorship, and resource-driven programming to help students thrive academically, socially, and personally.
In alignment with this mission, we are excited to announce an opportunity to join our team as a Lobo Companion, a peer mentor role dedicated to helping new first-year students transition smoothly into UNM's diverse and vibrant campus community. As a Lobo Companion, you will play an essential part in building community, fostering belonging, and guiding students through the critical first steps of their Lobo journey.

LOBO COMPANION ROLE OVERVIEW
Lobo Companions serve as approachable, knowledgeable, and encouraging peer mentors for incoming first-year students at UNM. Through relationship-building, communication, event involvement, and intentional outreach, Lobo Companions help students successfully navigate their academic and social transition into college life.
In this role, you will welcome new students into the UNM community, introduce them to university resources, and help them form meaningful connections with campus programs, events, and support networks.

EXPECTATIONS
Represent UNM and CEP with enthusiasm, positivity, and professionalism, reflecting the values and spirit of the Lobo community.
Serve as a peer mentor by assisting first-year students with their academic, personal, and social adjustment to college, directing them to appropriate campus offices and support services.
Establish a welcoming presence and maintain regular communication with your assigned first-year students through biweekly outreach (phone, text, email, and GroupMe).
Provide guidance, alleviate adjustment concerns, and ensure students feel connected, informed, and supported throughout their first semester and beyond.
Plan, promote, and host a variety of free educational and social events, workshops, and meet-ups designed to strengthen first-year engagement and student success.
Attend and participate in Operation Registration events to help first-year students engage with campus life and prepare for academic success.
Collaborate with fellow Lobo Companions and CEP staff to support program initiatives and contribute creative ideas that enhance the first-year student experience.
Uphold an inclusive environment that values diversity, cultural awareness, and belonging for all students.

TIME COMMITMENT
10-20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters
Required participation in trainings (dates TBD)
Availability to attend designated events, activities, or workshops throughout the academic year

COMPENSATION
Hourly wage: $14.00 per hour
Professional development: direct experience in mentorship, leadership, communication, event planning, and student support
Opportunities to attend student life events as part of your role

REQUIRED ABILITIES:

-Demonstrate enthusiasm for mentoring and supporting incoming first-year students

-Possess strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

-Show the ability to think critically and develop creative, student-centered solutions

-Work well both independently and as part of a collaborative team

-Maintain professionalism, reliability, and initiative in outreach and engagement responsibilities

-Exhibit a positive, welcoming, and culturally aware attitude
