Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Research Technician in the Andermann Lab at UNC-Chapel Hill. Dr. Andermann is an Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases. The Andermann lab studies the gut microbiome of patients with cancer. The Andermann Lab will hire the Research Technician to perform laboratory tasks related to shotgun metagenomic sequencing ( DNA extraction, library prep/ PCR, pooling of samples) and will also be responsible for the basic bioinformatic processing of reads through an existing bioinformatic pipeline. Other tasks in the lab include coordinating basic lab work related to the collection, processing, and sequence library preparation of stool and microbial samples. The Research Technician will work under the close direction of the principal investigator, Dr. Tessa Andermann, in collaboration with other labs and PIs as part of the Cancer Center and the Division of Infectious Diseases.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in a microbiology and molecular biology lab.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience in microbiology and molecular biology laboratory bench work, including qPCR, culturing of challenging bacteria.
Experience with large datasets; experience with PCR, qPCR, DNA extraction, and next-generation sequencing library preparation.
Prefer that the candidate have experience with shotgun metagenomic sequencing and basic bioinformatics workflows.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Physical ability to perform varied tasks, such as fine motor skills, challenging culture, and molecular techniques.
Mobility and strength to store and access research samples, reagents, and supplies.
