Summary
Responsible for overseeing and coordinating phlebotomy procedures within a healthcare facility. This role is also responsible for serving as a laboratory liaison to patients, nursing personnel, and staff, and assures excellence in quality and safety of blood collection and analysis. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Obtains quality blood samples using a variety of phlebotomy methods for all age groups. -Ensures accurate patient identification, quality specimen labeling, processing, handling, and transportation of specimens. -May assist in the recovery of patients experiencing adverse reactions and provide a rapid response to medical emergencies in the inpatient setting. -Communicates effectively with patients and patient care teams, explaining procedures and addressing patient concerns to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction. -May assume charge responsibilities or other tasks from the Lead Phlebotomist, as assigned. -Oversees staff training and competency assessments, ensuring proper documentation. -Troubleshot complex issues in collaboration with other departments and reviewed quality control and reports as assigned. -Handles sharps and biohazardous materials in accordance with regulatory requirements to ensure the safety of patients and staff. -Works fluently with computer programs and systems, and complies with HIPAA regulations. -Performs other tests, administration, and specimen collection as assigned. Education High School Diploma or Equivalent required Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Phlebotomy Technician [National Certification] - Generic - HR Only required Class D Passenger Vehicle Driver's License [State License] - Generic - HR Only preferred Experience Experience in phlebotomy 3-5 years required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Demonstrates proficiency in proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens, including correct tube selection, volume, and stability requirements. - Possesses good written and oral communication skills, the ability to prioritize work, manage time wisely, and adjust to changes in work volumes and projects. - Superior customer service skills, with the ability to show empathy and respect for patients' privacy and autonomy. - Demonstrates complex problem-solving skills outside of everyday occurrences and is proficient in downtime procedures and protocols. - May specialize in a specific process, patient population, or testing type. - Works independently and collaborates effectively within a team, actively partnering with team members by fostering an inclusive work environment and respecting others' experiences and perspectives.
