Job Summary


Employment Duration: 3 months

The Medical Assistant supports patient care delivery in a multi-specialty ambulatory dermatology practice. Working under the supervision of Ambulatory Services leadership and alongside clinical nursing staff, this role performs a wide range of patient care, clinical support, and workflow coordination tasks to ensure safe, timely, and efficient care. The Medical Assistant may float across all ambulatory dermatology clinic sites as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Support

  • Perform routine clinical functions including taking vital signs, height, weight, allergy verification, medical history (including skin cancer history), and chief complaints.
  • Facilitate use of interpreters for patient appointments and document interpreter utilization.
  • Prepare patients, exam rooms, and equipment for examinations and procedures.
  • Complete required competencies to assist with dermatology-specific procedures.
  • Conduct sterile processing steps for outpatient clinical instruments and maintain required logs.
  • Clean and prepare instruments for transport to Sterile Processing.
  • Serve as a clinical chaperone when needed.
  • Transport patients safely within the clinic setting.
  • Monitor and support patient flow to ensure timely visits.
  • Obtain specimens and perform point-of-care lab procedures per established policies.
  • Prepare biopsy documentation and materials, transport specimens to Dermatopathology, and provide wound-care instructions to patients.
  • Maintain required clinical logs (e.g., temperature logs, crash cart logs).
  • Process referrals and secure medication authorizations.
  • Support providers with patient communications.
  • Follow all infection control, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Communication

  • Demonstrate professional and courteous communication in person and by phone, adhering to Medical Center Telephone Standards.
  • Communicate provider delays to staff and patients; assist in managing clinic expectations.
  • Share relevant patient or workflow information with the care team.
  • Identify and escalate issues to nursing staff or supervisors.
  • Utilize APeX (Epic) within scope of practice, including:
    • Vital sign documentation
    • Chief complaint entry
    • Medication and allergy updates
    • POCT ordering under protocol
    • Documentation of POCT results
    • Pended orders
    • Medication refill encounters
    • Scheduling testing with provider orders
    • Opening telephone and staff message encounters
  • Demonstrate strong teamwork, adaptability, professionalism, and patient rapport.

Operations & Maintenance

  • Maintain clean, organized, and fully stocked exam rooms, preceptor spaces, and lab areas.
  • Order and maintain supplies and equipment as directed.
  • Review lab logs and distribute results to providers.
  • Obtain authorizations for medications and procedures.
  • Schedule complex procedures and coordinate services for patients.
  • Support lunch coverage planning for medical assistants.
  • Adhere to infection control and sterilization procedures for equipment.

Please note: An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Completion of an approved Medical Assistant training program.
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification.
  • Experience using Epic electronic health records.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform job duties effectively and safely.

Preferred Qualifications


  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant.

License/Certification


  • Current AHA CPR/BLS certification
