Overview:

We are seeking a Junior Staff Research Scientist to develop, implement, and analyze state-of-the-art, trustworthy deep learning methods that advance scientific discovery. This position is for the Discrete Algorithms group, Mathematics in Computation Section, within the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across data-rich science domains (e.g., quantum, energy, security, health) and mission-focused programs. You will contribute to, or lead, research on LLMs for scientific software and quantum compilers and on the assurance of deep learning for science (robustness, security/privacy, and uncertainty quantification). You will be expected to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • LLMs for scientific software and quantum compilers,
  • Assurance of AI/ML for science (robustness, security/privacy, and uncertainty quantification).
  • Participation in developing and analyzing new computational methodologies for scientific problems, often customized to complex and large-scale scientific applications.
  • Active participation in professional organizations.
  • Deliver ORNL's mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace - in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in mathematics, computer science, computational science, engineering, physics, or a field relevant to the job duties of this position.
  • At least two years of postdoctoral research experience.
  • Effective communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience applying LLMs to scientific software and quantum program compilation/verification; familiarity with compiler toolchains (e.g., MLIR/QIR) is a plus.
  • Experience in assurance of deep learning algorithms (robustness; security/privacy, e.g., DP or FL; and uncertainty quantification).
  • Experience scaling training/inference on GPU-accelerated HPC systems and collaborating on multi-institution DOE projects.

Special Requirements:

A 2 to 3 page research statement, and an official or unofficial graduate school transcript are required.

Letters of Recommendation: Please provide the names of three references that can attest to your research expertise and record. Should the candidate be shortlisted they will be asked to arrange for letters of reference be sent directly via email tomudrichcd@ornl.govwith the subject line 'Reference Letter, Trustworthy Deep Learning Algorithms for Science'.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements:

For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. All employees must also be able to obtain and maintain a federal Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card as mandated by Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which requires a favorable post-employment background investigation.

To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.

For foreign national candidates:

If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment.
