Position Overview
Our growing alternative-investments client is seeking a Controllerto join their team. This is a hands-on, high-visibility role overseeing accounting operations, consolidations, financial reporting, and system improvements across a complex portfolio of entities in the commodities investment space. The Controller will partner closely with senior leadership, external advisors, and operational teams while providing accurate financial reporting and insights that support strategic decision-making. This role is onsite in Stamford, CT, with WFH Fridays available during the summer months.


Key Responsibilities:

Financial Management & Reporting
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll, journal entries, and reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely month-end close and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Lead consolidations and intercompany eliminations across multiple entities.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with US GAAP; familiarity with IFRS is a plus.
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis for senior leadership.
  • Analyze financial results, identify risks/opportunities, and provide actionable recommendations.
Cost, Controls & External Relationships
  • Strengthen and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for external stakeholders including audit firms, tax advisors, and other outside parties.
  • Support system migration initiatives (current platform: QuickBooks).
  • Manage wires, treasury-related tasks, and routine operational accounting functions.
Leadership & Collaboration
  • Work closely with the VP of Finance, providing insights and supporting strategic financial planning.
  • Supervise and develop a future staff-level accountant (hiring planned for next quarter).
  • Ensure proper training, accountability, and competency of future team members.
  • Collaborate across the organization to communicate financial insights and ensure timely, accurate information flow.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; graduate degree preferred.
  • CPA highly preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience (public/private mix strongly preferred).
  • Prior supervisory or team-lead experience (minimum one year).
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP; IFRS exposure a plus.
  • Experience with consolidations, financial reporting, and system/process improvements.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Sage, NetSuite or comparable platforms.
  • Advanced Excel skills (vlookups, pivot tables, formulas); programming/automation experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear, actionable financial insights.
  • High initiative, detail-oriented, and eager to grow within a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

The individual may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, and can participate in medical, dental, and vision benefits as well as the company's 401(k) retirement plan.
