Summary:

  • Collection of blood specimens from properly identified patients through established procedures. Transportation and receipt of specimens to the laboratory with distribution to various departments.

1. Collects blood samples using approved techniques.

Collects blood specimen according to age specific needs

    • Correctly identifies patient.
    • Correctly labels the blood tubes.
    • Draws blood at correct time.
    • Collects the appropriate specimen.
    • Collects sufficient quantity.
      • Demonstrates competence with collecting blood on all age groups and their special needs. 100% compliance in identification of patients by their hospital armband prior to collection. Minimum recollections due to volume, incorrect tube, incorrect collection time. Annual blood culture contamination rate of <3% annually. PKU's collected and processed appropriately.

2. Demonstrates computer skills necessary for collection lists, verifying a specimen's status, receiving specimens into the Lab, generating labels for the specimens and accessing patient results.

    • Demonstrates a strong working knowledge of collection and unreceived lists. Prints at appropriate times. Prioritizes, collects, packages, and receives specimens. Specimens are delivered to the appropriate section. Responds immediately to the Emergency Department.

3. Patient procedures are performed according to procedure manual. Proper safety and identification procedures are followed when dealing with patients under any circumstances and environment.

    • Patients are properly identified prior to blood collection. Samples are labeled after blood is collected. Specimens are identified at the time of receipt. Labeling is done in a manner which all labels are legible. Specimens are correctly accessioned and accurately labeled at the tube station. Supervisors are notified when mis-identifications are encountered. Samples are accurately collected with minimal trauma to the patient.

4. Works independently and is a self-starter who needs no reminders of duties and tasks that need to be completed.

    • Accountable for quantity and quality of work produced.
    • Strives to be an effective member of the Laboratory Staff.
      • Professional at all times. Completes work and recognizes other duties that need to be performed without direct supervision. Establishes a good rapport with patients, nursing staff and physicians.

5. Performs clerical functions related to specimen ordering. Staffs tube station. Responds to telephone and personal inquiries.

    • Utilizes the computer to order, cancel, and credit tests. Actively responds to the tube station. Inquiries are handled in an appropriate, correct, and friendly manner.

6. Actively participates in the training, orientation, and supervision of students/new/less experienced personnel. Participates in staff meetings, in-services, and technical programs.

    • Information from written documents and communications are reviewed, retained, and appropriately applies. Recognizes that training is an important part of the job. Trains in a patient and professional manner. Maintains documentation on the training process.

7. Contributes to the smooth and efficient operation of the department by:

    • Recognizing and performing duties in an independent manner with minimal supervision.
    • Demonstrates professional judgment and problem solving skills.
    • Uses a knowledge base of specimen collection requirements.
    • Demonstrates the ability to recognize a problem beyond their control and seeks advice from a technologist or supervisor.
      • Performs duties and interacts with coworkers to provide continuous coverage for the phlebotomy areas. Problems are accessed and solved with minimal supervision. Demonstrates the ability to make valid and consistent decisions. Employee contributes to overall section productivity. Employee demonstrates ability to handle multiple tasks at one time. Employee covers assigned work area; answers the phone, covers for breaks and lunches etc. Employee follows through on requests promptly. Schedule is adjusted to meet workload and the needs of the department.

8. Recognizes the need and participates in assigned projects and committees that are essential to the efficient operations of the Hospital and Laboratory.

    • Corporate and Community Heath Collections
    • Assigned Committee involvement
    • Participation in CAP and JCAHO accreditation
    • Weekly, Monthly, Yearly Inventory
      • Takes on assigned projects and completes them within project deadline. Incorporate project time in with the daily work assignments. Gives input and ideas and volunteers for additional projects. Monitors inventory

  • EDUCATION
    • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • EXPERIENCE
    • 1 year preferred
  • LICENSURE/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION
    • Certification such as ASCP or ASPT preferred but not required
  • OTHER SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
    • Basic computer skills or keyboarding. Strong communication and customer services skills.
