About the Job

Introductory information:
This position is located in the University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC) Innovation Lab. The UMGC Innovation Lab is a research group that operates within the UMGC and develops novel tools and technologies for genomics and genetics research. The researcher in this position will conduct experiments to develop novel husbandry methods and genetic tools for invasive zebra mussels.

Duties may include but not be limited to conducting experiments, analyzing data, recording and documenting results, presenting results in formal and informal settings, contributing to scientific publications, as well as working to support the research activities of the Innovation Lab. The work performed may also involve training employees and collaborating with non-UMGC researchers.

Major job functions

a) Laboratory experiments (50%)
- Carry out laboratory experiments under the direction of the UMGC Innovation Lab Group Leader
- Work collaboratively with other staff and researchers
- Troubleshoot experiments
- Operate all related specialized instrumentation and technologies
- Track multiple concurrent projects

b) Data Collection and Analysis (30%)
- Accurately collect, analyze and interpret data
- Evaluate and clearly communicate experimental results
- Keep detailed records of experiments, of sufficient quality to allow publication of results and full reproduction of experiments
- Ensure that data and research materials are organized, maintained, and archived when appropriate, ensuring future access
- Conduct regular meetings with supervisor to discuss the progress of projects
- Communicate with collaborators regarding project planning, status, and results
- Coordinate experiments with other staff members

c) Scientific scholarship (20%)
-Stay current on the scientific literature related to ongoing projects
-Contribute to writing and revising research papers describing experimental results
-Contribute to writing research grants and progress reports

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Position requires Ph.D. in science with focus in biological sciences, molecular biology, genetics, genomics, engineering, or related field. Experience in a laboratory environment. Ability to follow oral directions and written protocols precisely, independently motivated, able to manage time and meet deadlines, strong communication skills, meticulous organizational skills, reliability and accountability.

The University of Minnesota Genomics Center (UMGC) provides genomic technologies and services to researchers and clinicians at the University of Minnesota, and to external academic and industry scientists throughout the United States and internationally. Our mission is to advance the use of genomics and achieve this by acquiring state-of-the-art instrumentation and offering an array of services, including next-generation sequencing, long-read sequencing, expression analysis, genotyping, epigenomics, single-cell and spatial genomics, metagenomics, as well as related support services such as nucleic acid extraction and quality control. We strive to keep pace with the ever-broadening world of "omics" technologies and to expand our role at the University and the wider biotech community.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Rate: $61,008.00 annually. This job is designated Profile One: Time spent working remotely is occasional or inconsistent. Dedicated on campus work space to be provided
