The Department of Student Life at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a Director of Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. About the Opportunity: This position reports to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students and will work at the will and pleasure of the Dean. The Director of Student Conduct is responsible for administering Board of Governors Policy 6.1 ("BOG Policy 6.1") and its related procedure, i.e., the Main Campus's Student Conduct Code. This position manages and supervises the Office of Student Conduct which includes behavioral and Title IX issues at the main campus of WVU. This position also oversees hearing level cases for the regional campuses and provides guidance and leadership on all student conduct matters. What You'll Do
- Manages and supervises the Office of Student Conduct staff which currently includes three assistant directors, Case Manager, Office Administrator, three internal investigators, one Office Administrator, two graduate assistants, and several student workers.
- Performs all duties required by BOG Policy 6.1 and its related procedure; ensures integration between BOG Policy 6.1 and its related procedure; ensures integration between BOG Policy 6.1 and BOG Governance Rule 1.6 (Title IX, and-discrimination policy) and the respective procedures.
- Reviews, investigates, and adjudicates potential violations of the Student Code of Conduct for all students and ensure appropriate sanctions including use of restorative justice, community service, suspension, and expulsion.
- Uses a procedurally-sound process that ensure fairness for all parties involved. Coordinates the tracking and reporting for the Clery Act Annual Security Report.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with campus departments in addition to meeting with faculty, students, and administrative groups to support their understanding of and participation in the academic integrity process.
Oversees the development and delivery of educational programs and presentations for faculty, staff, and student to showcase services and promote personal responsibility and awareness of the Student Code of Conduct. - Coordinates the office assessment efforts, including development and implementation of learning outcomes and assessment tools.
- Works with University faculty and other academic personnel, University administrators, University's Title IX Coordinator, Provost's Office, Housing and Residence Life, and members of the University and Morgantown community to resolve student conduct matters fairly and efficiently.
- Communicates with external persons and entities regarding student conduct matters, including attorneys for accused students and alleged victims.
- Prepares correspondence, forms, notes, and decisions for student conduct related matters, as appropriate.
- Oversees Advocate database in accordance with University records policy.
- Serves as primary database administrator for Advocate system which is utilized by main and divisional campuses as well as other departments including Housing and Residence Life and office of Equity Assurance.
- Provides consultation to WVU community members with respect to BOG Policy 1.6 and its related procedures.
Qualifications
- Master's Degree in college student personnel, student affairs, higher education administration, or related field or a J.D. degree from an accredited law school
- J.D. is strongly preferred
- With Master's Degree - a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in student conduct is required or transferrable job-related experience from related field.
With J.D. - a minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in student conduct or transferrable job-related experience from related field. - Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered
All qualifications must be met by the time of employment Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - The ability to prioritize and work autonomously in a high-traffic environment. Cases include but are not limited to individual, student organization, organizational, academic integrity, Title IX, and other behavioral misconduct.
- Strong organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to prioritize tasks and meet strict deadlines.
- Attention to detail and evidence of strong supervisory skills.
- Possess critical thinking skills, including policy and procedure analysis and interpretation.
- Working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, PDF, email and utilities, and related software programs.
- General knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the Clery Act, Title IX, Campus SaVE Act, and due process requirements for student conduct proceedings.
- Working knowledge of student conduct related litigations.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others in a diverse, complex environment.
