Job Summary

Teach courses in emergency medical services (EMS), such as introductory EMT & paramedic programs, in classroom, laboratory and clinical settings. For example, programs like the EMT Certificate of Competency prepare students to handle emergency care, stabilization, patient assessment, and prepare for the national registry. Guide, mentor, and assess students in both theoretical knowledge and practical skill competency-this may include lab simulation, real-world EMT scenarios, skills testing, and clinical/field placements. Participate in departmental and college service obligations: faculty meetings, committee work, student advising, continuing education, outreach, etc.

Essential Functions

  • Instructing and supervising a diverse population of students using active-learning, student-centered teaching strategies.

  • Planning, developing, and implementing curriculum and instruction for EMT/paramedicine courses including classroom, laboratory and clinical/field settings (for relevant faculty positions).

  • Evaluating student performance through assignments, exams, simulations, practicum/skills labs, and clinical field work; providing feedback and remediation as needed.

  • Maintaining and demonstrating currency in the field of emergency medical services (EMS) and teaching practice, including compliance with state and national EMS education standards.

  • Collaborating with program director, advisory boards, clinical partners (ambulance services, fire departments, hospitals) to secure internships/clinical placements and ensure the program meets accreditation or certification requirements.

  • Ensuring that equipment, simulation lab, supplies, and instructional resources relevant to EMT/paramedic training are functional, up-to-date, and safe for student use.

  • Promoting and supporting student success, retention, and outcomes (for example, certification pass-rates, job placement) and participating in program assessment and continuous improvement efforts.

  • Advising and mentoring students regarding their educational and career goals in EMS, including helping them navigate certification/licensing processes.

  • Engaging in college service including committee work, professional development, outreach, and staying current with changes in EMS protocols, standards, and technology.

  • Ensuring safety in all instructional settings-for students, patients (in clinical/field), and staff-and adhering to college and program safety, liability, and regulatory policies.

  • Adapting instruction to a variety of delivery modes (in-person, hybrid, online) and to all student populations with different learning needs.

    Minimum Qualifications

    For occupational disciplines, a combination of education and/or experience is required to qualify. A faculty may qualify with any of the following:
    • Five years of occupational experience in the field to be taught OR
    • Three years of occupational experience in the field to be taught and a Bachelor's degree or higher OR
    • A Master's degree or higher in the teaching field


    Desired Qualifications

    A. Current National Registry Paramedic certification

    B. Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited University

    C. Completed an Instructors Strategies Course

    D. Prior EMS teaching experience at an institution of higher learning

    E. Additional Instructor Certifications to include: BLS, ACLS, PALS, ITLS, AMLS, PEPP.

    F. Experience with AZDHS Emergency Medical Services Trauma System rules and regulations as demonstrated on the resume

    Special Working Conditions
    • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
    • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
    • May require numerous evenings or weekends May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
    • May be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs
