Job Summary

Under general supervision of Unit Managers and Supervisors, wash & restock pots, pans, food preparation bowls & dishes following HACCP guidelines. Perform a full range of kitchen cleaning & organizing tasks. Bus dishes, food, & trash byproduct as needed from dining area. Clean & sanitize tables. Clean & sanitize carts. Remove, clean, hang dry & replace mats. Handle various unit equipment & machinery, dishes & glassware, utensils & tools with care. Work with various pieces of industrial level dishwashers. Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks to all equipment assigned, following daily & deep cleaning schedules & processes established by the SOP. Stock, organize and rotate food and service products as needed. Work independently or as part of a group with minimal supervision. Guide, delegate & assign a wide range of tasks to student assistants. Maintain general security of the Unit food, equipment & supplies. Perform a full range of cleaning & organizing tasks in kitchen, customer areas, bathrooms, interior & exterior docks areas, interior & exterior dining areas. Utilize hand tools, sweep, mop, dust, polish silverware, vacuum, sort, organize & wash equipment & dishes or areas of the facility. Sweep, mop stains/spillage. Dust, clean, & polish equipment, furniture, walls, fixtures, shelving, windows, window blinds, window sills, vent grills & elevators. Clean & disinfect restrooms, waste receptacles, drinking fountains, partitions & doors. Fill soap & paper dispensers. Empty & clean trash & recycling receptacles. Organize, clean & maintain adequate supply closets. Ensure all tasks & guest interactions are accomplished with a high sense of urgency. Interact with internal & external customers by demonstrating professionalism, enthusiasm & integrity. Convey welcoming attitude. Remain conscience of potential hazards; communicate hazards to supervisor. Ensure compliance with State & Federal Sanitation Guidelines. Notify management of maintenance problems. Independently safely use, assemble, disassemble & train others to use kitchen equipment following University Dining Services standards.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • High school diploma and / or equivalent certification / experience / training
  • Customer service experience in a retail and/or food service setting to cooperate with public and other staff members and convey a helpful, positive attitude.
  • Experience washing pots/pans/dishes in a service-oriented setting.
  • Experience cleaning and maintaining sanitation and safety of a retail or food service environment.
  • Skills to communicate in English, both orally and in written form to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and interact effectively with co-workers, supervisors and guests.
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for lifting, handling broken glass and skill to use wet floor signs when mopping floors or cleaning up spills.
  • Skill to verify proper concentration of sanitized solution using test strips.

  • Skill to guide a wide range of tasks to student assistants and kitchen support staff.
  • Skill to differentiate products' composition, biodegradability, nutrition, etc.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively with and provide excellent customer service to a diverse campus community; communication skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Problem solving skills to troubleshoot problems as they arise, find alternate solutions, and implement solutions in a professional and efficient manner.

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owner/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. Smoking, the use of smokeless tobacco products, and the use of unregulated nicotine products (e-cigarettes) will be strictly prohibited on any UC Davis owned or leased property, indoors and outdoors, including parking lots and residential space.

Work flexible/variable schedule (sometimes in excess of scheduled shift) including occasional overtime, evenings/nights, weekends and holidays, occasionally on short notice to meet operational needs.
