Job Summary


Employment Duration: 3 months

The Medical Assistant supports efficient, timely patient care by assisting providers in the clinical setting and ensuring all ordered services are completed accurately and promptly. As part of the care team, this role delivers high-quality service to patients, families, and clinic visitors while working under the supervision of a physician.

Key Responsibilities:

Customer Service

  • Provide excellent service and contribute to continuous service improvement.
  • Foster a team-oriented, inclusive environment.
  • Communicate clearly and listen effectively.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a proactive approach.
  • Respond promptly to customer needs and resolve concerns.

Clinic Services Support

  • Coordinate provider and clinic schedules to ensure smooth patient flow.
  • Greet, register, and direct patients and visitors.
  • Monitor wait times and help balance patient distribution among providers.
  • Review schedules to ensure necessary documentation and diagnostic results are available.
  • Schedule follow-up appointments as directed.
  • Maintain patient files, records, and charts.
  • Enter patient charges into the clinic's computer system.
  • Maintain supplies and ensure clinic equipment (e.g., refrigerators) is functioning properly.
Clinical Assistance
  • Obtain vital signs, weights, and measurements and prepare patients for exams.
  • Collect patient data as directed by licensed clinical staff.
  • Document accurately in medical records.
  • Enter ICD-9 codes and update the Problem List.
  • Communicate relevant concerns or findings to providers.
  • Perform supervised clinical procedures such as aerosol treatments and pulmonary function testing.

Team & Work Environment

  • Support a positive, collaborative work environment.
  • Assist and cooperate with care team members.
  • Help identify and solve problems proactively.
  • Adapt to staffing needs and workflow changes.
  • Prioritize patient care activities effectively.
  • Resolve conflicts using a customer-service-oriented approach.

Compliance & Department Standards

  • Follow all legal, safety, and organizational guidelines for patient care.
  • Maintain awareness of patient rights, confidentiality, and hospital values.
  • Attend required department meetings.

Other Duties

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • Pediatric experience
  • Minimum of 3 months of recent experience in a busy healthcare environment
  • Ability to take vital signs and assist with medical procedures

Preferred Qualifications


  • Medical Assistant Certificate, CNA Certificate, or post-secondary medical training.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Southeast Asian languages.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and patient billing systems.
  • Computer proficiency.

License/Certification


  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification
