Position Summary

The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Pediatric Hematology/Oncology division is looking for a Research Scientist 1. The Research Scientist will help to oversee clinical trials for pediatric oncology, hematology, hemophilia, AYA (Adolescent and Young Adult) oncology, adult in-patient cancer clinical trials, and translational research, including multi-site trials. The Research Scientist will perform routine scientific research tasks, such as identifying eligible hematology and oncology study subjects for study protocols, screening and enrolling subjects, and developing recruitment and retention strategies.

The Research Scientist processes scientific experiments and tests following established study protocols and research methodologies. The position also works in the laboratory to process and ship biological specimens. The Research Scientist designs, performs, and/or oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance. Responsibilities include coordinating the collection of data and lab tests during subject visits, meeting patients to administer questionnaires, and entering all data into study databases in a timely manner.

The position maintains oversight of study regulatory files, ensuring compliance with GCP guidelines, and ensures accurate tracking and documentation of study changes, updates, and amendments. The Research Scientist will also support efforts to ensure grant compliance, including documentation, reporting, and adherence to funding requirements. Support may extend across pediatric, AYA, and adult in-patient oncology research operations as needed.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential to this position. Experience with organizing, sorting, and analyzing data in Excel spreadsheets is preferred. Applicants should have familiarity with the fundamentals of Clinical Trials, including HIPAA regulations and International Conference on Harmonization and Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP) guidelines. Experience with regulatory processes such as IRB submissions, continuing reviews, and consent form development is favorable. Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; no previous experience required.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Recent experience as a research assistant in clinical trials or other related research
  • Recent experience with IRB submissions, including initial submissions, continuing reviews, amendments, and consent form development
  • Recent experience with data abstraction from medical charts, including EMR systems used in clinical research
  • Proficiency in Excel, MS Word, and research databases including EVELOS and eRDE
  • Recent experience performing routine scientific research tasks, including subject screening, enrollment, and protocol-driven laboratory procedures
  • Medical terminology and ability to translate medical/technical language into lay terminology for patients and families
  • ACRP or SOCRA Certification
  • Completion of Human Subjects Protection Training (e.g., CITI Program)
  • Ability to work independently to accomplish tasks as required
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a multi-faceted research team to accomplish tasks as required
