The English Department has an opening for a part-time Lecturer in English. The English Department at CU Denver oversees the university's course composition program, which consists of a sequence of two classes-English 1020 and 2030. The Department also offers undergraduate majors in Literature; Film; Creative Writing; and Writing, Rhetoric, and Technology; as well as an MA degree in English Studies.

The English Department seeks a teacher with experience I composition instruction to teach 2 sections of core composition at the University of Colorado Denver English Department. Each class section meets twice per week for set class hours for each session. In addition to leading class discussion, composition teachers must also prepare for classes, provide regular feedback on assignments, and meet with students outside the classroom. A successful applicant will have training in composition studies and experience in the composition classroom. The applicant should be able to engage with students with wide range of abilities and experiences.

This is a part-time position that requires the applicant to teach on site and hybrid.

Working Faculty Title: Lecturer
What you will do:

  • Teach 1-2 sections of Core Composition 1020 or 2030.
  • Prepare for classes, provide regular feedback on assignments, and meet with students outside the classroom.

Qualifications you already possess (Minimum Qualifications)
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Master's degree in English or related field (or near completion).

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
* Training in composition pedagogy and experience in the classroom teaching composition, particularly with incarcerated student populations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate Effectively, both in Writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to teach a dive student body.
  • Ability to develop a clear syllabus outlining rules and assignments for the class.
  • Commitment to applying rules in a consistent manner ability to present writing instruction in classroom in an engaging way.
  • Ability to work effectively with students on a 1-to-1 basis.
  • Ability to provide clear feedback on student written work.
  • Flexibility and empathy in adapting to student circumstances.

Conditions of Employment

  • This is a part-time position that requires the applicant to teach on site and hybrid/ remote. This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks or personal work preferences. Working from the office is encouraged when working on tasks that require a high degree of collaboration.

Mental, Physical, and/or Environmental Requirements

  • The ability to sit for extended periods, stand and walk occasionally, reach with hands and arms, use hands to manipulate a keyboard and mouse, and have good near vision for computer work;often requiring minimal lifting, but may involve bending or reaching to retrieve items from shelves or drawers.

The starting salary range for his position has been established as $1704 per credit hour (undergraduate level), or $1849 per credit hour (graduate level).
The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
