Job Summary

Assistant Nurse Managers are registered nurses who are responsible for the operation and clinical management of the East 8 Medical-Surgical Specialty Unit over a designated period of time. East 8 is a 30-bed acute care unit that provides comprehensive medical-surgical care to patients with a wide range of diagnoses and care needs. The unit also functions as a specialty unit for the management of acute care ventilator patients with the goal of optimizing respiratory status and supporting ventilator weaning, as well as providing palliative care focused on improving quality of life for patients and families.

The Assistant Nurse Manager must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and skills to support sound judgment and decision-making, effective organizational abilities to direct unit operations, and strong interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and collaboration among interdisciplinary team members. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts responsibility for, and is accountable for, their own nursing practice and leadership role. The Assistant Nurse Manager actively seeks opportunities for professional growth and assumes responsibility for ongoing self-development.

Registered nurses serving in the Assistant Nurse Manager role are expected to be knowledgeable and skillful in administrative coordination and clinical leadership. The Assistant Nurse Manager assumes responsibility for planning, coordinating, and evaluating nursing activities to ensure safe, high-quality, and patient-centered care across the unit.

In addition, the Assistant Nurse Manager provides clinical leadership and serves as a resource to nursing staff and interdisciplinary partners. Responsibilities include supporting patient flow, staffing, and daily operations; promoting compliance with institutional policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements; and supporting evidence-based practice initiatives. The Assistant Nurse Manager may deliver direct patient care as needed and supports comprehensive, continuous, and patient-centered care, including assessment, planning, implementation, education, evaluation, and coordination of care for diverse patient populations.

Autonomous nursing practice is expected in this role. The Assistant Nurse Manager is responsible for exercising independent clinical judgment consistent with the American Nurses' Association Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Nursing care and leadership decisions are made within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration to optimize patient outcomes, staff engagement, and unit performance.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Valid California Registered Nurse License without restriction
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent acute care RN experience in a medical-surgical, telemetry, or specialty acute care setting
  • Demonstrated clinical experience caring for acutely ill medical-surgical patients with diverse diagnoses and complex care needs
  • In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations and internal policies.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner. Prepares and presents a variety of reports, documentation, analyses, and project proposals.
  • Demonstrated ability to support daily unit operations, including patient flow, staffing coordination, and clinical problem-solving
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with interdisciplinary teams (physicians, respiratory therapy, case management, palliative care, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and support nursing staff in a fast-paced acute care environment
  • Basic computer proficiency and ability to use electronic health records and clinical documentation systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Master's Degree, or equivalent experience/training.
  • Working knowledge of acute respiratory care, including experience caring for ventilated patients and supporting ventilator weaning processes
  • Experience providing or supporting palliative and end-of-life care, with an understanding of patient- and family-centered care principles

The unit also serves as a specialty unit for the management of acute care ventilator patients with the goal of maximizing respiratory status and weaning from the ventilator. As well as the unit provides palliative care to patients with the goal of improve the quality of life.
