About The Role

The strategy intern will support the analysis of business threats and opportunities; the long-term business outlook & develop a strategy. Support the benchmarking project by identifying appropriate peer utilities, collecting and normalizing data across finance, operations, safety, and regulatory areas, comparing WGL to peers, and producing actionable case studies that highlight best practices and improvement opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy Development & Governance

  • Supports business unit strategic planning through quantitative analysis, industry and market research, and leadership engagement

  • Prepare executive presentations, memoranda & support materials to communicate the strategy to all stakeholders

  • Provides ad-hoc analytical and quantitative support.

Industry Benchmarking

  • Peer selection - Define peer selection criteria (size, geography, customer mix, regulatory environment, ownership structure).

  • Metric definition - Identify and define 6-10 key metrics for each functional area (finance, operations, safety, regulatory).

  • Gather the most recent 3-5 years of data for each metric from primary sources (annual reports, FERC/EIA filings, regulatory filings, safety reports, industry surveys)

  • Case-study development - Prepare 3-5 case studies describing the practice, implementation steps, resources required, outcomes, and applicability to WGL.

Reporting & presentation - Produce an executive summary slide deck and a detailed appendix with raw data and methodology.

What You'll Bring

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree in business, Finance, Engineering, or Data Science

  • Research and industry analysis skills

  • Knowledge of quantitative analysis

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office tools - PowerPoint & Excel

Knowledge of BI tools preferred
