Are you an experienced Labor & Delivery nurse ready to lead, mentor, and elevate patient care? UNC REX is seeking a Clinical Nurse III to join our fast-paced, high-volume Labor & Delivery team, where advanced clinical expertise and leadership make a meaningful difference for mothers and families every day.

About Our Unit:
The UNC REX Labor and Delivery OR provides comprehensive care across labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. Our team cares for high-risk antepartum and postpartum patients in a modern, well-equipped environment that includes:

  • 3-bay OB Emergency Department (OBED)

  • 20 labor rooms

  • 3 Operating Rooms (ORs)

  • 3 Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) bays

As a Clinical Nurse III, you will serve as a clinical leader-supporting complex obstetric cases, assisting with Cesarean sections and other procedures, and partnering closely with physicians, Nursing Assistants, and Surgical Technologists to ensure exceptional outcomes.

UNC REX is proud to have a dedicated team of OB Hospitalists who provide rapid emergency assessments and care. We also collaborate with private practice OB/GYNs and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) to deliver the highest level of maternal care.

Nurse-to-Patient Ratio:
1:1 to 1:2, based on acuity and patient needs

Summary:

Provides competent nursing care consistent with professional nursing standards. Responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities:
1. Maintains an environment of safety for patients, self and others and supports patient safety initiatives.
2. Participates in identifying and meeting learning needs of self and others. Participates in development and presentation of staff education programs geared to unit needs and staff level. Assists in development of, and utilizes patient education materials relevant to patient population. Works with manager and team leader to facilitate competency of staff.
3. Evaluates patient progress and revises plan accordingly. Maintains accountability for carrying out components of the plan. Guides peers through development and evaluation of plan of care.
4. Demonstrates expertise in care of patients with complex problems, including appropriate physical, psychosocial and educational aspects of care. Performs bedside point of care testing as required for patient care plan. Provides direction in implementation of the plan and serves as a resource to other staff members. Utilizes hospital standards, policies and procedures in delivery of care. Role models care delivery to peers.
5. Develops goals to promote professional growth or minimize limitations. Achieves goals and objectives within identified timeframe or renegotiates with supervisor. Participates in activities that facilitate intra/interdepartmental collaboration and serves as role model for nursing involvement. Functions as a consultant in various phases of the nursing process throughout the hospital. Participates in development and achievement of unit goals and performance improvement activities. Effectively uses communication systems. Participates in promoting cost-effective care. Models behaviors that effectively give feedback to coworkers. Incorporates awareness of public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the health care environment into practice. Promotes a safe, clean environment.
6. Synthesizes data from complex situations to determine priorities for care. Includes appropriate physical, psychosocial and educational needs. Synthesizes assessment data into meaningful whole prior to communication with others. Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of individual patients and families. Develops relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for the patient and their own needs. Narrates care to peers to share patient population knowledge and skills.
7. Collaborates with patient/family to prepare or update the plan of care. Consistently makes use of available multidisciplinary resources in planning care. Uses full range of communication means to convey planning. Identifies and addresses cultural and ethnic issues in planning patient care. Consistently demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex problems. Shares information with manager and team leader to support safe and effective care.
8. Reads journals that contain articles and studies that are applicable to practice and discusses their feasibility of implementation with others. With assistance, applies research findings to practice. Brings ideas and questions to the staff at large for assessment of applicability. Assists with data collection in research being conducted in work area. Shares knowledge with staff.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* NC RN Licensure
* ACLS
* BCLS
* NRP
* Specialty certification required
Professional Experience Requirements:
* One year experience working as a licensed RN
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:
* Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret clinical information and technical procedures. Ability to document clinical information. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions from patients, physicians, family members, and other staff. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions.
