Job Overview:

The Assistant Director role reports directly to the Director of Radiology. It does not function independently, but acts as an extension of the Director's leadership, operating within clearly defined authority and escalation expectations.

The Assistant Director of Radiology Services provides operational, clinical, and administrative leadership support to the Director of Radiology. This role is responsible for day-to-day operations, executing departmental initiatives focused on quality, process improvement, turnaround time (TAT) optimization, staff engagement, and patient experience, while ensuring compliance with regulatory governing bodies and organizational standards and any additional duties.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, Radiologic Sciences, or related field (Master's preferred).
  • ARRT certification by State of New Jersey or relevant clinical background preferred.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive radiology leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with:
  • Radiology Operations- All modalities: US, NM, Diagnostic X-ray, CT, MRI, Mammo
  • Process improvement initiatives
  • TAT optimization
  • Staff engagement strategies
  • Patient experience metrics (Press Ganey preferred)
  • Experience in union environments preferred.

Essential Functions:

Operational Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Support the Director of Radiology in daily operations across all imaging modalities (CT, MRI, X-ray, Ultrasound, Mammography, IR, Nuclear Medicine, etc.).
  • Assist with workflow optimization, throughput improvement, and resource utilization.
  • Monitor daily operations to identify issues requiring intervention vs. escalation to the Director.
  • Ensure departmental processes align with hospital goals, policies, and strategic initiatives.
  • Partner with the Director of Radiology to identify, implement, and sustain process improvements across all imaging modalities.
  • Completes tasks and assignments in a timely, accurate and efficient manner. Remains positive and focused despite obstacles and setbacks.
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency in completing assignments.
  • Organizes multiple assignments and/or projects simultaneously to accomplish goals.
  • Lead initiatives aimed at improving exam turnaround times (TAT), throughput, scheduling efficiency, and workflow standardization.
  • Use operational data (volume, staffing, TAT, delays, bottlenecks) to recommend and implement improvements.
  • Support Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies as directed.
  • Ensures technologist, supervisors, leads, temps agency techs, clerical staff meets requirements as defined by applicable Department Specific Equipment Competency Checklist.
  • Escalate system-level barriers or resource constraints impacting performance to the Director.
  • Follow up on all open items with required solution/action plan.

Staff Engagement & Culture

  • Actively support staff engagement initiatives aligned with departmental and organizational goals.
  • Assist with strategies to improve Press Ganey scores, employee engagement survey results, and service recovery outcomes.
  • Partner with managers, supervisors, lead techs, staff to:
  • Address workflow pain points impacting morale
  • Improve communication and transparency
  • Promote accountability, recognition, and professional growth
  • Promote a Just Culture environment focused on accountability, safety, and staff engagement.
  • Participate in corrective action processes under the guidance and direction of the Director.

Patient Experience & Press Ganey Performance

  • Support initiatives that enhance the patient experience across all imaging touchpoints, including scheduling, wait times, communication, and service recovery.
  • Monitor Press Ganey and patient feedback trends; assist in developing and tracking action plans.
  • Collaborate with frontline teams to address patient concerns and improve consistency in patient-facing behaviors.
  • Escalate systemic patient experience concerns to the Director.
  • Maintains positive relationships with all customers, employee, physician, patient, visitor, and guests.
