Responsibilities

Located in South Central Virginia, The Hughes Center is a highly-structured psychiatric residential treatment facility for youth ages 10 to 22 with neurodevelopmental disorders. The Hughes Center also provides private, community-based educational services. We provide both individualized and holistic care for adolescents and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a nurturing, family-friendly environment. We utilize a multidisciplinary team approach to provide comprehensive evaluations and evidence-based treatment (and educational) interventions with the intent to increase each youth's level of functional independence. Our team also works diligently to address or manage medical conditions and challenging behaviors that are often associated with individuals who are diagnosed with neurodevelopmental disorders. We challenge our residents to adapt to and apply learned skills within new environments and situations, and to maintain functional use of these skills when they return to their homes or other community-based settings.

The Shift Lead will assist in the direct care and management of children, adolescent and young adult residents (age 13 to 22 years) as prescribed by the physician and treatment team; to provide supervision, safety and crisis management for the resident population; to complete documentation of resident behavior and participation in programming; to adhere to the scheduled activities; role model positive, mature behavior; utilize positive behavioral strategies to minimize resident crisis and maximize success.

Additional Job Duties:

  • Responds to crisis situations and manages resident behaviors in accordance with the Behavioral Management Program.
  • Assists in providing safe delivery of care to meet the goals and objectives of each resident's plan of care.
  • Assists with the unit milieu to guide the development of acceptable habits and attitudes by consistently and fairly implementing the behavioral program, emphasizing good choices, and positive interactions.
  • Completes documentation regarding resident supervision and participation in the program in a timely manner.
  • Assists the teacher in providing instructions and training in classrooms.
  • Attend and participate in all unit meetings and trainings.
  • Consistently follows the program activity schedule and implements all safety and security procedures.
  • Serve as a role model for residents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Make facility rounds continuously, stay visual to all units.
  • Ensure following of scheduled activities.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing patterns.
  • Assist with all approved resident passes and daily resident transports.
  • Ensure all room searches and safety and security checklists are completed on each unit,
  • Notify Program Operations Director and maintenance of all facility issues or property destruction (if minor note on safety & security checklist, major - notify maintenance worker, call POD).
  • Document all call offs or early dismissals that may result in mandatory stay-over and call POD.
  • Assign staff to units as indicated by POD, and ensure they receive breaks.
  • Notify POD for approval of any hours worked outside of regular shift hours and any MHC schedule changes.
  • Review all incident reports and physical hold paperwork prior to shift end and ensure competencies.
  • Ensure pat downs are completed and documented.
  • Serve as facility role model in implementing program and providing intervention.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Good verbal and written skills, ability to rotate shifts and units as necessary, and ability to maintain resident's confidentiality. Knowledge of principles of psychology and child growth and development are useful. Limit-setting, responding to children and adolescents in a caring, mature manner, while maintaining professional boundaries necessary. Must consistently exhibit mental and emotional ability to understand and perform the essential functions of the job.

Education: High school education required.

Experience: Two years related experience with adolescents and children or related college coursework in a related field. Previous experience with emotionally disturbed, intellectually disabled, individuals with autism, or physically disabled persons preferred.

Licensure: Current Virginia driver's licensure with a good driving record, CPR certification, First Aid Certificate, and Crisis Management Certification.
