About the role: Fermilab's Accelerator Division (AD) ACORN project is seeking an Engineering Analyst - Field Hardware System to assist with the analysis of our existing legacy field hardware systems. Under general direction the Senior Engineer leads a structured Discovery & Documentation effort for legacy accelerator controls systems. This role establishes standard documentation methods, performs field investigations, and produces as-built records that preserve institutional knowledge, improve maintainability, and directly inform modernization planning. Work includes coordinating technicians, and engineers, ensuring quality and consistency of deliverables, and aligning outputs with applicable requirements, standards, and DOE orders. What your day-to-day as an Engineering Analyst - Field Hardware System at Fermilab will look like:
- Plan and execute a phased engineering documentation program from inception through completion, including scope definition, schedules, and resource planning.
- Develop and maintain standardized documentation templates and guidance (e.g., signal lists/I/O lists, narrative descriptions, and system/block diagrams).
- Perform field walkdowns and technical verification of legacy control system configurations, including module inventories, signal tracing, and interface identification.
- Produce clear as-built documentation packages suitable for operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and new-staff onboarding.
- Lead peer review and verification of documentation deliverables; enforce consistent naming, formatting, version control, and "verified vs. inferred" conventions.
- Translate legacy system behavior into modernization-ready information, identifying key functional requirements, dependencies, and constraints to preserve in replacement solutions.
- Provide technical direction to technicians, designers, and less senior engineers contributing to documentation activities.
- Research and propose solutions to engineering problems; analyze alternatives and communicate recommendations to management.
- Participate in procurement, installation planning, testing/commissioning support, and initial operational readiness activities as required.
- Assist or lead development of cost/schedule estimates and monitor progress against planned work.
- Serve on review committees, safety panels, and working groups as assigned; contribute to lab-wide engineering practices and standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned and follow all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices pertinent to the position.
Essential Competencies and Attributes for Success:
- Bachelor's in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 8+ years of engineering experience, or a Master's or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 4+ years of engineering experience.
Applicable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Proficiency in NIM, CAMAC, Beam Instrumentation, Beam Synchronous Timing, and Synchrotron LLRF systems is required.
- Proficient in engineering fundamentals and the application of theories, concepts, principles, and methodology relevant to the discipline.
- Demonstrated ability to develop specifications, technical documents, and design solutions for major and technically complex engineering efforts.
- Strong project planning and coordination skills; ability to estimate effort, schedule work, and direct multi-contributor technical tasks.
- Ability to work effectively in field environments, gather evidence, reconcile discrepancies, and produce clear, auditable technical documentation.
- Strong communication skills, including ability to train others on processes/templates and drive review/approval cycles.
- Commitment to quality, configuration management, and safe work practices in operational accelerator environments.

- Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
