Intern, Additive Manufacturing Data Science

ASTM INTERNATIONAL
18.00 To 18.00 (USD) Annually
United States, D.C.
Jan 06, 2026

Committed to serving global societal needs. ASTM
International positively impacts public health and safety, consumer confidence,
and overall quality of life. We integrate consensus standards - developed with
our international membership of volunteer technical experts - and innovative
services to improve lives... Helping our world work better.

Role Description:

We are looking for a Junior or Senior undergraduate student to help bridge the gap between mechanical engineering and data science. Our Additive Manufacturing (AM) programs generates and receive valuable data in "messy" formats (PDFs, Excel logs, images). Your role will be to build the digital tools that turn this unstructured information into a clean, usable datasets for our engineering team.

Learning Objectives:

* Hands-on experience solving real-world "messy data" problems in an engineering environment.

* Gain exposure to additive manufacturing technologies and their applications.

* Develop proficiency in the management and critical analysis of manufacturing data.

* Enhance skills in data visualization and communication.

* Learn about the standardization processes and how data science can contribute to setting industry standards.

General Responsibilities:

* Build Data Pipelines: Write Python scripts (using Pandas/NumPy) to automatically scrape and consolidate and standardize data from disparate sources (Excel, CSV, txt).

* Unlock "Trapped" Data: Explore and test open-source libraries (like PyPDF2 or Tesseract OCR) and LLM's to extract text and tables from PDF reports and images.

* Data Organization: Collaborate with our engineers to define a standard data structure (schema) for how our 3D printing data should be stored.

* Exploratory Analysis: Once the data is clean, perform initial statistical analysis, and possibly explore AI/ML methods, to help us identify and visualize trends, patterns, and anomalies in various datasets within Advanced Manufacturing projects.

* Visualization: Prepare detailed reports and visualizations to communicate findings to stakeholders.

* Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate data-driven insights into ongoing projects.

* Communication: Participate in regular meetings and present progress updates.

Education:

Must be enrolled in a related Bachelor's degree program as a rising Junior or Senior at an accredited College or University.

Key Requirements & Competencies:

* Currently enrolled in Computer Science, Data Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

* Comfortable writing Python scripts to manipulate data (coursework or project experience with Pandas is highly desirable).

* Basic knowledge of Machine Learning / Data Mining.

* Exposure to Database Management (SQL) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a plus.

* Self-starter with ability to work remotely and engage in a virtual working environment.

* Excellent communication skills (English).

* Ability to document work and convey information in a simple and effective manner.

* Enjoys analytical thinking and problem solving.

* Detail oriented with exceptional organizational skills.

* Excited to learn at the intersection of AI and Additive Manufacturing.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent and close visual work at desk or computer
  • Frequent sitting and working at desk
  • Frequent verbal and written communication with team and other stakeholders by phone or video conferencing

Time Requirements & Compensation:

  • Remote
  • 35 hours per week, May/June through August.
  • Compensation: $18.00/Hour
