Position description

CELLULAR MECHANISMS OF

NEURODEGENERATION AND NEUROREGENERATION IN GLAUCOMA

Ou Laboratory

University of California, San Francisco

The Ou laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco is recruiting a highly motivated and creative scientist to join our team as a Research Specialist. Our group is interested in studying the early mechanisms underlying retinal ganglion cell degeneration, circuit remodeling in glaucoma, and retinal ganglion cell replacement. Our approach takes advantage of mouse and primate models of experimental glaucoma, biolistic transfection of cells, high-resolution microscopy, electrophysiology, and molecular and cellular biology. We are also studying circuit disassembly, plasticity, and reassembly in non-human primate and human glaucoma tissue, and the integration of stem cell-derived retinal ganglion cells into diseased retina. Highly motivated candidates with a solid record of productivity and a neuroscience background or related fields are sought. Prior experience with mouse and/or primate models, confocal imaging, electrophysiology, molecular and cellular neurobiology, stem cell biology, and/or programming are desired. Experience with RNA-seq is a plus. Responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, preparing and presenting research findings at meetings, helping write scientific manuscripts, and applying for fellowships/grants. We are a small and collaborative lab that promotes a culture of openness, mentorship and support, and career development. The successful candidate will have a solid publication record, written/verbal English communication skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently while being a team player.

We are seeking a Specialist at the Junior, Assistant, Associate, or Full rank.

Junior Specialist - Baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.

Assistant Specialist - Master's degree or a baccalaureate degree with 3 or more years of research experience.

Associate Specialist - Master's degree (or equivalent degree) or five to ten years of experience in the relevant specialization.

Full Specialist - terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or ten or more years of experience in the relevant specialization.

Applicants must meet the requirement for the Specialist rank by the time of hire. Applicant's materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.

See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $55,000 - $194,800.

Duration: Minimum of 2 years with advancement to the second year dependent upon satisfactory progress during the first year. The appointment may be extended beyond 2 years, contingent on funding and satisfactory performance.

Please send CV, a statement of research experience and career goals, and contact information for three letters of reference (including mailing address, phone number, and email address). Screening of applicants will begin immediately and will continue as needed throughout the recruitment period. Salary and rank will be commensurate with the applicants experience and training.
